You heard me.

No, not another kid.

A dog.

A large, black-and-brown German Shepherd cross named Jet, to be exact.

He's wonderful.  I'm smitten.  So is he.

We decided a few weeks ago that we'd get a dog, and I've been religiously checking Petfinder to see what the local SPCAs and shelters have.  We found this guy on Saturday, went to see him on Sunday, and adopted him on Monday.  I'm sure that he's the right dog for our family because we were second in line to adopt him, and in competition for that spot with another potential adopter.  The first adoption fell through and we were picked over the other guys.  I was literally bouncing up and down, I was so excited.  He was a stray up north but he was definitely well-trained, as he responds very well to commands, walks reasonably well on a leash, and is very considerate.  He does have an issue with men, though, so we think that he was abused.  :(  But he's a wonderful dog, and I can't wait to get to know him better!

Congratulations on the new addition!  I love that you adopted a rescue dog.  It's crazy how many out there need homes.  That's how we got our guy too.  How is he adjusting to his new home?

He's adjusting really well!  He is great with the kids and is turning out to be really protective of me when he thinks that a stranger is threatening me.  He listens really well, especially for treats and except when I want him to get out of the kitchen.

The biggest problem is that he's a chewer -- today he chewed the feet off Monkey's Superman action figure, yesterday it was the top of the yellow glitter glue, before that it was the back of the head of a Little People nurse -- and that he has a taste for butter.  I had to pull him back from the butter dish twice today.  Hilariously, DH didn't notice the teeth marks in the butter and used it on his sandwich before I could get rid of it.  :D

It was incredibly sad going through Petfinder and seeing all the dogs in the local area that needed homes.  :(  I'm glad that we were able to find the right dog for us at the SPCA!
