Hi

My 1yr old dd has diareah. It started a few days ago, but it was only 1 a day, and she doesn't have a fever, or isn't throwing up, she seems generally happy, but now it is getting to be more times a day. Today alone she has already exploded 3 times. She is eating and drinking well, and is otherwise fine. Should I take her to the doctor? Is there anything I can give her?

Thanks

Lesley

I think if you are concerend, then you should take her to the dr.
It could be a viral infection.... Or it could be nothing, but if it does not stop, then I would be concerned.
Try toast, no dairy, rice, and maybe some applesauce and yogert...
Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks to Traci & CL-Proudmom

My one question now is, when CL-Proudmom said no dairy (underlined) what does that mean??? no formula, or cheese, or cottage cheese? nothing??? The other things I could do without, but other than her formula, she won't acept hardly any other liquids.

Do I stop formula for a few days???

Thanks

Lesley

Hi,, not dont stop formula, I think we thought your daughter was on milk and that would have been ok to give her water and other drinks for a few days,, that is how she eats and what she will eat the most of do not stop giving her that. They also have pedelite popcicles too I would give her them to control dehyration. It also could be that she is cutting some teeth and she has lose stool. I would not let this go too long but the doctor will also tell you that as long as she is still eating and drinking all is well. Whenever there is vomiting or dirreah they say to do the what they call the ''BRAT DIET'',, which is bannana's, rice, applesauce, and toast!!

In most cases, you should continue feeding your baby as usual. Bowel rest was once the treatment of choice, but now it is beleived that continuing feeding will result in diarrhea that is easier to manage.

For babies, breastfeeding or formula should always be continued.

Baby's who take solid foods may continue to do so, as tolerated. Suggested foods include bananas or apple sauce, white cereal rice cereal, noodles, potatoes, or toasted white bread. Small amounts of finely chopped meats may also be added if they have already been introduced into your childs diet.

The B.R.A.T. diet is a common treatment for diarrhea used with children who eat solid foods. Stands for

.Bananas

.Rice(or other starchy food)

.Applesauce

.Toast

Sorry if I confused you.
I thought it was an older child.
Normally when they are older, they ask you not to give dairy, since it can cause worse diarreah...
Sorry again for the confusion...
But if it is a infant, don't stop feeding them and just ask your ped what you should do for children so young.
