All Day Kindergarten?

My daughter starts kindergarten next week. The school board just instituted an all day program. Since it happened so fast, all kindergarteners will follow the 1/2 day schedule for 2 weeks before starting all day on August 30th. I'm excited and I think she will like it a lot but I'm looking for other parental opinions...

HELP!!!

My son just started Kindergarten and he goes 6.5 hours a day.
It has been this way for quite awhile and seems to be ok with the kids and parents.
Andrew does great going for so many hours and has not had a problem dealing with the lenght at all.
Good luck and hope you child enjoys school.

When our schools here had an all day kindergarten "pilot" program in 2001-2002(meaning the test program to see if it worked well), we had our now 8 year old DD in it. She really liked the all day kindergarten, and did very well in it. They still have the all day kindergarten here as an option and it costs an additional fee, and with a large family and me staying at home it wasn't worth it to send DS7 although I had wanted to!! Good luck!

Kim, I don't post here very often, I was just lurking and read your thread. I'm a big fan of all day kindergarten. Where I live, 1/2 day kindergarten is about 2 hrs 20 minutes. Of course, there's time out for recess, snack, library, gym etc. That already leaves very little time for formal instruction, which they do have in kindergarten. If a child needs special ed services, that is even more time out of the classroom. ODD is starting first grade this year. We sent her to private school that had all day kindergarten. Our neighbor has a son one year older, so we knew the daily schedule for public kindergarten quite well. We figured she would have had approx 90 mins a week in the classroom, taking out time for special ed and the other things I mentioned. Hardly enough time to learn, IMHO. (I agree they're learing even if they're not doing the 3 R's). I'm assuming your dd doesn't have special needs, because you didn't mention it. I just wanted to share my experience with you.

My ds LOVES all day Kindergarten. He had been going to half day preschool for 1.5 years previous so this is not a huge step for him. He is actually napping. He even told me "Its not that bad taking a nap, I kind of like it" Wow!

He likes eating lunch at school, having recess, PE, and all that extra fun stuff they do in the PM. Mornings are for academics, late AM and afternoons are for lunch, PE, special activities.
