my little girl is reading!!! i'm so proud!!! you know i posted here about how to teach her and i got a lot of great tips that i started doing, and then all of a sudden it's like it just "clicked" and she got it. we went on a road trip to visit my dad and grandparents, and all the way down there (8 hours) she played with her leappad doing some reading and writing books. then while we were down there my grandma worked with her some, and when we got back i got her this little dry erase board for her to practice her letters on, and it's been soo amazing. she picked that thing up and started writing words like she's been doing it all her life, writing big words like tristan, bananna, marbles, rooster, bathtub, etc etc. she just sits on the floor and asks me how to spell something, i tell her, and she writes it down then reads it back. i'm so floored by the things she's writing, and what's more, they're perfectly readable! she's picking up the phonics all on her own, whenever she writes one she draws a line under whichever phonic it is and says "that's really one letter because it makes only one sound." isn't that smart?? sorry, i know i must sound like a huge braggart, but i'm just so proud of her! we went on a ferry boat while we were at my granparents' house, and alleria thought at first that we were talking about a 'fairy' boat. when we got there and there were of course no fairies, she turned to me and said "mom, there's no fairies on this boat, is it spelled different than the fairies that have wings and fly?" my mouth just fell open, lol.

anyway, just had to share. it was like everyone said, the light just went on and now i can barely keep up with her! thanks for the help everyone :)

AWESOME!!! Hold on to your hat, because you are in for a ride of your life! About the time my DD started reading, was the same time I decided that I DEFINITELY needed to get back to school myself because she was starting to stump me with some of her questions! LOL The awesome part about first borns like ours, is that they will (do) LOVE to teach their siblings!! My DS by himself, I never would have guess for him to have a chance with DD, but with her "tutoring" him, he might even be a step ahead of where she was at this age! It is neat to watch!

Keep up the good influances!

Congratulations!!! I missed the post on teaching a child how to read. How did you help her? Any tips for me? My dd recognizes a lot of words and can sound things out but she gets bored real quick. She does love writing new words though. I don't want to push her too much so anything that could positively encourage her would be great.
