Hi there!

I am a brand new stay at home mom, I am on maternity leave now.....

I was wondering, for all you stay at homes, aside from household necessities, do you get an allowance from your husband? If so, approximately how much?

We've been talking about it... and my hubby was asking me how much... I didn't want to give an amount too high or too low! :)

Thanks,
T

Hi there! Just to clarify...

I have access to my own Credit Cards and his Credit Card and we will be setting this Saturday my account to be join with his Chequing/Savings acct.

I am so used to handling money in the past, we just got married last year.. and my husband is a CFO and he has to be the bean counter in the Family.

He told me I can spend using the Credit Card that he pays for and once I have my bankcard from his account I can use that too.. Before I got a credit card from him, I've been sending him a spreadsheet of all the things I paid for and he writes me a cheque...

The "allowance" that I am asking from him is for me to have my own money (not for necessities like food, clothes, groceries). I told him I want my own money that I can spend or save as I wish and also when I give him presents later on, I don't need to pay for it using our account...

I'm so new to this. I'm 34, have always worked.. and now I am totally dependent on him for everything?????????

Okay I think I get what you're saying. I think it is necessary for couples to allocate a specific amount of money aside in the budget for fun money. Is that what you're asking, how much fun money we have? Lol, right now my fun money is $150 a paycheck and it's going into savings for my Great Dane. Dan gets no fun money and I'm substatuting nekkidfun,

In my house I do the budgeting and the bill-paying so I see what is left over and decide whether certain things are needed or whether money is just being spent out of boredom. DH likes for me to handle the money. We do not have joint accounts. In fact, DH has his savings account and his paycheck is direct deposited into my checking account. (He doesn't have access to that, talk about trust!) But I write the checks for the bills and make sure everything is paid and we talk openly about where the money goes. He has a credit card that he uses mainly for gas and small purchases but will sometimes use for things for himself as well. We always pay it off at the end of every month so we don't accrue interest. And if he needs cash for something he justs lets me know and I give it to him. We have a budget for our bills but we don't include our spending money in with that. Mainly because our goal is to save as much as possible so anything extra usually just goes into savings.

IIWY would figure out what you would be doing with your money before deciding on an allowance amount. Do you want to go to lunch twice a week? Do you like to buy/rent movies? Is it for extras like clothes, nails, hobbies, etc? Deciding how much you want to spend on what you're spending this money on will help you decide on a set amount. Then add ten or twenty dollars to it, just to be safe. LOL

An allowance?? Are you 12? Oh dear if you have to get an allowance from your husband, I personally think there is something wrong there. I have never had an allowance since getting married 10 years ago. I would be offended if my husband took my checking account priveleges away. We share a checking account, and I can spend whatever I want, now I don't go overboard and never have, I do pay all the bills, and yes I am a SAHM. In fact my husband is the BIG spender in the family. This is my opinion only. Good Luck!!

I have some advice for you, get your name on his accounts asap, you deserve access to those. As he should have access to yours....I don't understand that.

I don't see why you would have to give him a specific amount of money you need on stuff like that....And it's to be called your "allowance". And why is he giving you this, it's your money,too... Sorry, I guess this is a touchy subject for me, it seems your husband is in total control, and even though he does have a great job, you should have the control, too, a partnership. I thought that's what a marriage was?

Allowance.? I give my dh an "allowance". Lol.

My sister is pretty wealthy and gets a "weekly allowance" from her dh. I have issues with that!
