I would pick neither but only because I do things a little differently.
My children have some work that is required of them. They HAVE to make their beds in the morning. The HAVE to scrap off their plates at each meal and put it in the dishwasher. They HAVE to do a 5 minute clean up on the living room every day at 2:30. The HAVE to put away their laundry each day. They HAVE
I started this poll because when I was 12 years old, I got $5 a week. I did plenty of stuff for my $5... dishes every other night, set the table, emptied the dishwasher, my own laundry, pulled weeds, etc. Once I was old enough to get a job, no more allowance.
I have a 14 year old BIL and my inlaws pay him $20 a week. Both my husband and I think this is ridiculous. DH got the same as me growing up - $5 a week. BIL does about as much for his money as we did, so we don't understand why he gets $20 a week.
My 2 cents - don't overpay your kid or they won't appreciate their money when they have it. I definitely made my $5 a week go a long way... mostly because I had to. It's a good lesson. We plan on paying our boys $5 a week for a set amount of chores. Not only for the reason I gave above, but also because spending $40 per week on our kids' allowances is not feasible! As long as my boys are taken care of, which they will be, why do they need $20 a week? All they'd do is waste it.
The point of an allowance is to teach your kids the value of a dollar.
This isn't meant to cause a debate... just my point of view. Please post with your opinions as well. :) Thanks!
Oooh, Traci! I LIKE that! I'll have to tell DH about it... cool idea!
