I know I have mentioned it before but when I was a pre-k teacher Alpha-phonics is the program I used for my students. I taught 100's of kids to read using this, including my oldest ds and seven of my nephews and nieces.
I am always surprised that it is not more well known. It is a great program! Best of all, there is nothing to buy but the book, and some index cards to use as flash cards. I really think it is overlooked by educators because it is not a very visually pleasing program. It is a a bare bones way of teaching. But Sammuel Blummenfield(?) believes that most programs are so distracting that it is hard for children to grasp, because they are so busy looking at the pictures.
My seven year old still uses the lessons he learned from Alpha phonics to de-code words.
Me, me, me!!!!! lol

I would highly recommend it!
