How many coats did it take before it wasn't streaky? We painted the dining room red this morning and I knew it would take more than one coat but was still a little surprised at how bad it looked. I probably should've used a primer. Can anyone enlighten me???

Hi,

We painted our kitchen "Ruby Ring". I put it over a rosey pink type color and even then it needed 4 coats. I didn't use a primer and it may have been okay with just 3, but it was my kitchen and I wanted it right. We have since already painted one of the red walls over with "riesling" and that only took 3 coats.

We have painted every single room in our house and two of them twice or more. Just be patient. I have learned to always let the previous coat dry completely or else it will pull up and smear, tape, tape, tape. And if you don't like it, you can always paint over it!(we learned that from pumpkin orange!)

Good luck!!!

We painted the den "Red Fox" which is really dark, but it took a primer and 2 coats. It really was worth it tho, because we comments all the time on how great it looks. Good luck!!

well sweetie I hate to break it to ya, but since you didn't prime, it may take 3-4 coats.

when you paint, make sure you paint in a "V" pattern (small section), then roll sideways to fill it in. Keep doing that and you will get better coverage and it will look better.

GL!

I agree with a pp about using grey primer. Everyroom that we painted in our house with dark paint, we used grey primer and it came out beautifully after 2 coats. Make sure the coats have really dried well before applying more.

I've never posted here (just found the board and was lurking) and saw your post & thought I'd reply...

We tried to paint the boys bathroom red and it was just eating up the paint! We happened to be at Home Depot and ran into a painter. He said that if you're painting w/a dark color you should always paint your wall black, dark grey or w/a primer first. He said red was the worst color to paint with as it can look "streaky".

Our kitchen & breakfast area is RL Barnyard Red (more burgandy then true red) and we didn't have to do this...not sure why but I've had it in two houses and niether time have we had to do that. Our ceiling and everything is painted and it didn't require but two coats.

Good luck w/your painting!

Thanks for the input, all. I should've used a gray primer. I went to a different Home Depot to pick up the second gallon and they actually had and example of red painted over a pink primer, gray primer, and white wall so you could see the outcome of all 3 situations. The one painted over the gray primer looked exactly like the paintchip after 2 coats but the other two didn't. Wish I'd known that to start with. You'd think all those episodes of trading spaces I'd watched that woulda sunk in.

Anyway, we've done coat #2 and it looks much better. It's still a little patchy but after another couple of coats it should look great. The color is Cranberry Splash, very pretty, and it's in the dining room. We're going to put up white wainscotting around the bottom and a pretty wood laminate on the floor. Can't wait until it's done!
