Anyone have tubal? How did you decide?

Hi Ladies,

I am new here and am facing a decision that is quite difficult for me to make. I am 28 weeks pregnant with my 5th child. DH and I have been talking a lot about my getting a tubal ligation before I come home from the hospital. I am not sure how I feel about it though. I am afraid that I will not feel as feminine, that I will feel less of a woman, by "losing" my ability to bear children. We definitely don't want anymore, but I am still torn between doing it and not. Anyone had the procedure done? How do you feel about it? What factors played into your making the decision? Any feedback is most appreciated.

TIA,

Priscilla

Hi and welcome to the board!

This is just my opinion so I hope I don't offend you...but isn't it safer for your dh to have a vasectomy? On a woman a tubal is a major surgery...isn't it? And all of that right after having a baby! A vasectomy can be over and done with really quickly and the man is not likely to suffer any consequences. I am not sure if you have considered this alternative but it is just a thought.

Glad you found us!

Actually, we have thought about a vasectomy as well. DH is not opposed to any type of birth control at this point. I guess I am just afraid. It all seems so permanent. KWIM?

My two cents:

Why don't you hold off making such a major decision until after the baby is born? I know most women want to just get the surgery done while they are already in the hospital, but do consider the fact that you've got so much going on (emotionally/hormonally) right now. It might be best to wait a while. It's such a permanent thing to do. It's best to make such a decision when there's not this deadline looming over you ...
