Anyone tried antidepressants??
| Sun, 04-11-2004 - 6:47pm |
Hi,
It's been a while since I've visited this message board.......anyway, I have a 2, 3 & 4-year old & a very unsupportive pretty much worthless (except for his paycheck) husband & I'm goin nuts! Mainly I'm feeling overloaded as far as keeping up basic things in the house like laundry, picking up (toys), keeping food in the fridge & cooking meals that the kids will eat. My husband travels at least once a month for 3-5 days & routinely arrives in the evening about 7, right after I've given all 3 kids their baths & gotten them ready for bed. The stress keeps building & building & I feel like I just need something to take the edge off. Over the past year I've tried a couple antidepressants & haven't liked any of them because of side effects (insomnia, headache, etc.)
Can anyone out there relate to my problems & have you tried any antidepressants (or other medications) that have helped & if so, which one?
Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it. I'm feeling pretty bad right now. It's Easter & some of my family just left. We live a 6-hour drive from all my family, so when I feel bad, it's not like I can jump in the car & drive to Grandmas......I wish I could. Also, we just moved to the San Diego area about a year ago & don't really have any friends......I only have casual aquaintances from my 3 & 4-year old's preschool.
Ok, well............if anyone has any advice or any ideas as to a good happy pill, please let me know!
Tanya :(

I have never personally tried any antidepressants, but now adays there are many different ones to try if one doesn't work for you. Some of them take time to get used to before the side effects wear off (tiredness, etc.).
I have tried Tang Kuei (from Herbalife). A nurse I worked with suggested it for PMS symptoms. I don't remember if it actually worked for me or not. I was really leary about taking herbs and I didn't take them long before I ended up pregnant and stoped. I haven't taken them since I had my ds. Maybe, I should though. I'm going through a slight bought of depression now. I forgot all about the pills.
Either way, talk to your doctor. He/She can help you find some thing that works for you. Good luck.

I am so sorry that you are feeling so down.
I have been there and sometimes still am.
I have tried Zoloft and it seems to work pretty well.
I hope things get better for you soon.
I am short on time or I would write more, but I will be sure to talk more to you about this later.
Before you try an anti-depressant, try Rescue Remedy. It's a natural stress reliever. I've been using it for years on a wacky dog who suffers from separation anxiety - but since DS was born I've been using it when I start to feel overwhelmed, anxious, wound up or just out-of-sorts (it's made for people, by the way - I just used it for my dog). It got me through Easter Sunday with a bunch of relatives I can't stand -much better than the bottle of wine I usually need, and without the headache.
I buy it at Vitaminworld, but it's not made by them so you can probably get it elsewhere - although places like Target and Wal-mart don't carry it. It's ~$15 for a small bottle, and the bottle lasts quite a while. The dosage is 4 drops under the tongue, or you can add 4 drops to something you're drinking.
Good Luck!

As far as friends go, finding a support system of other stay-at-home moms can make a world of difference. I know that it's hard when you're in a new place - sometimes it takes work to get out there and meet new people, but it is definitely worth the effort. See if you can find a moms' group like MOPS, The Mom's Club, Mothers and More, etc. Check out your local library to see if there is a preschool storytime - it's a great place to be with other moms and their kids. Go to the park and talk to local moms (I can't tell you how many random moms I went up to at our park when I was a new SAHM - I was DESPERATE for someone to talk to!) See if there is a playgroup in your neighborhood, or consider starting one yourself. I joined my playgroup nearly 6 years ago after talking to a woman sitting next to me at a preschool open-house meeting, and now she and the other women in the group are some of my best friends. It is critical to have a support group of women who know exactly what you're going through.
Finally as far as the kids are concerned - it WILL get better! My kids are not as close in age as yours, but I did have 3 in 3 1/2 years. The first 2 years with all 3 of them were HELL!!!! But now they are 7, 5, and 3, and life gets just a little easier every day. The preschool years are so tough. Just keep telling yourself that it will get better one day!!!
I wish you the best of luck - please keep us posted!

Oh boy ... can I relate! I have a 6, 4 1/2 and 3 year old and also have a husband who is never home to help. I can't tell you about antidepressants but I can tell you what you are feeling is very normal. This is hard work, its relentless and it never goes away. Ever! I can tell you things will get a little easier in a year or two. It won't be as phsyically demanding, unfortunately the emotional demands only increase.
If you've been diagnosed with depression then you need to continue your search for the right medicine. Getting some me time - even if you have to get a sitter - is so important. I started this a few months ago - I have a highschool girl who comes over once a week for two hours. I take a bath, go shopping, something just for me! It has made a world of difference.
Good luck ...
