I am soooo ticked off!! They announced that in Texas they are killing the "Robinhood" plan for Texas public schools. This was a program that takes from the wealthier school districts to give to the poor school districts!

Even though I homeschool I still keep up with goings on in our public schools and volunteer for school supply drives and such.

They are building a 49 million dollar football stadium in one of the high schools in the wealthier areas of our town, but we have elementry schools who still have NO COMPUTERS!! God it makes me so angry! America says it is an equal education for every child! That is such crap!!! They should have said an equal educatiaon...as long as you live in a newer planned development and can afford to pay higher taxes!!

I am so upset! I know this is going to force the children in the poor districts to have even more problems than they already have!

You said it yourself. They can afford to pay higher taxes. Why should someone work hard for their children to have nice things only for the money to be given to someone who already lives off our taxes.

I'm not saying that they don't deserve a good education. They do.

That's all I am going to say, because I have a feeling that I am going to get reemed for this post.

Like the other post said - they can afford the taxes. Will this make everyone's taxes go up? We go to Catholic school here in Corpus Christi, Texas and we still pay public school taxes and here they are building a multi-million dollar school in one of the worst parts of towns and closing other schools that just need a little updating. Now on this side of town there isn't a great need for a new school but on the way other side of town there is. The city is growing on this side of town and there aren't enough schools to handle the growth, yet and I don't see any in the near future either, that the schools are over crowded and that can't be good for the children's learning.

It's gonna suck whereever you are but unless more people start making better decisions and speaking up for children it's gonna suck for a very long time.

Just my opinion

under the no child left behind act, that the pres signed in 2002?? i believe. any child can transfer to another school, if their schools does not meet the requirements....

here is part of it

Parents with children in schools that do not meet state standards for at least two consecutive years may transfer their children to a better-performing public school, including a public charter school, within their district. If they do so, the district must provide transportation, using Title I funds if necessary. Students from low-income families in schools that fail to meet state standards for at least three years are eligible to receive supplemental educational services, including tutoring, after-school services, and summer school.

I must say that I am dissapointed by some of the comments. But I am a big beleiver in everyone having a right to their opinion.

I guess I see things differently. I think it is horrible that some of our school children in America do not have even school books of their own. A lot of children in poor counties have to share books, while others kids have so much that they can still afford to add a 49 million dollar football stadium.

Most people in our county do not live off of others Taxes, we actually have a very high job rate. But unlike people in the planned developments we can not afford a

Not alot of transferring going on here. I am sure that it would probably benefit alot of kids here but it just isn't happening. Maybe because they don't realize that they can do this to a school across town. Maybe they don't want to put their child on the bus an hour or two before school starts to make the trip and then of course the hour or two to get home. It's all a social/economic matter I think.

I don't utilize the public schools here yet and won't for quite a few years. But the schools in my area are quite good and hopefully will still be in that state when my children start to attend them if we choose to go to public school when they get to middle school.

It's depressing and horrible to think that some of our nation's children aren't getting an adequate education. I don't know the stat's but I am sure that alot of children will be dropping out due to inadequate facilities, teachers, family status, etc.

We are the lucky ones.

Well said Sherrie

I know I could never look in a childs eyes and say.."uh sorry hun, I know you are a smart child and that you have no library books but these people can afford to pay more taxes then your family so we really can not give your school what it needs, they happen to make more money than you family so their children get the best of everything..Sorry!"

I can see how that would be frustrating, but I think that would be a good opportunity to teach children about material things. Who needs such a fancy football field? I went to an excellent elementary school with only the basics and I turned out fine. I think computers are even a luxury. Maybe see the glass as half full; the kids can get a good lesson in sharing (books). I think people who are just handed things don't really appreciate them. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

OK - first let me say that I am a Children's Advocate and may come off harsh in my comments to some but it's something that I am very strongly opinionated on and don't back down from.

So....

Mmmmmmmmm, could be, but I seriously doubt that having to share textbooks at school would be a lesson taught. That's why the students aren't getting the level of education they deserve. How can you learn or do your homework when your text is with another student? You can't - therefore you don't and you don't for so long and what happens...some will drop out, some will become stronger, some will just get by enough. It's not the students who need to fight the most for this but it's the parent's that need to step up and let their voice be heard. The student's need to benefit from it.

That is a sucky deal for those kids to have to suffer due to them wanting a football field!
I hope that things get better for them and they get their supplies.
Have they tried joining programs that reward the school for boxtops and buying certain products? Or going to shop at Windixie?

I wish that were the case Mel. This not just happening in our town...

There are children all over America(not going to even get into the world) that do not even have separate bathrooms for boys and girls. I have seen a school in New York that the ceiling is literally falling in on the students!

This is a problem all over America. Near the Mexico border school is taking place
