I got another hospital bill for having Nicholas. He has to pay for the same room I used and for a bunch of other junk.
I am looking at a total of $2400 plus just for having him.

I would be asking how it is possible to charge a newborn for food and whatever med's you were on..... they cannot POSSIBLY charge you that way... can they?

Now that's friggin absurd!!!! $500 for waiting for the placenta to fall out on its own???? Did the Dr actually have to go in there and get it out? I mean, there are times when the placenta doesn't get expelled on its own and they have to manually get it

Congrats on your new one! I feel your pain on the doctor bills. I ended up paying $3000.00 out of pocket for Cordy's birth ($1500 for me and $1500 for her) and will just finish paying that off by the time the next baby arrives.

$500 for placenta delivery is absurd! I didn't even look at the itemizations for my stay. I wonder if mine would be as interesting?

No, it came out on its own. I thought it was crazy when I got the itemized bill.
My OB also charged the delivery fee but she didn't deliver and then the hospital charged me for the circumcision and my OB is the one that did it.

Mel, I know you said you have insurance. Make sure they are being billed. Sometimes hospitals will send a bill to you before it's been reimbersed by your insurance or won't bill them at all. I don't know your situation, but remember the hospital should work with you.

When the twins were born we had a terrible time. Our insurance wasn't paying what they were supposed to. I'd never been in that situation before and didn't know how to handle it. The hospital ended up turning me over to a collection agency!! If I had only called the hospital and talked to them about what was happening that never would've happened. Anyway, my kids qualified for support from the bureau for children with medical handicaps (because they were born with respiratory distress) which FINALLY kicked in and paid it all off. This made me mad because they never should've had to, my insurance should've paid it. Anyway, about a year later the screw ups came to light and the insurance went back and paid everything they were supposed to. I don't know if the bcmh was ever reimbersed. Anyway, the moral of my story is don't trust that the insurance is doing what it's supposed to and don't be afraid to talk to the billing department at the hospital.

I agree with you Erin, check those bills carefully.

When we had Emily, the hospital kept billing the wrong insurance company and then would send us the bill.

This is the claim they sent to my ins. I have yet to get the bill.
I called the hospital and asked them why I was billed 2 times for one room we both stayed in.
They came up with some lame excuse.
The whole thing is crazy and the itemized bill for me was nuts, cant wait to see the one for Nicholas.

Charging you twice for something isn't just wrong, it's illegal. You can report them. Hospitals get fined frequently for such things. If your insurance denys the claim, don't you pay it. Dh's dept is one of the biggest billers in the hospital and they have to be VERY careful how they bill. They actually have a dept that works full time just to make sure everything is done properly.

Jenny had an apnea monitor when we came home. She had it for one month and one day and they charged the insurance for 2 full months at $400 a month!!!! I called them and told them that if the insurance didn't pay that they weren't getting a dime outta me, and they didn't argue.
