Has anyone heard of the book by John Gray called "Children Are From Heaven"? He is the same author who wrote the famous book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". In 1999, he published a book "Children are from Heaven".
I purchased the book about a year ago, and have really just began to read it. I think that it should be LAW that every parent must read this book. Basically, it is very informative on how to raise your child using positive parenting methods.
I have 2 stepsons, ages 19 years old. My husband and I raised them together, since their mother not in their lives, I was the only mom they knew. I guess that feeling of guilt that they didn't have their biological mother, as well as other reasons, prompted us to "spoil" them. Now, at 19 years, they have no respect for others' feelings, they only care about what they can get from any relationships they are involved. Both of them are very handsome young men who, have girls come up to them all the time, but a relationship never follows through because they do not respect the girls.
These boys do not have a conscious.
We now have three children together, and I do not want to make the same mistake with them. I have done so much research on raising children. This is what I have found out:
Spoiled children grow up to be spoiled adults, who believe that as a child, the parents gave them nothing. Spoiled children do not learn to empathize with others because they are too focused on their own self gratification. Not only do they expect to get what they want, but they want it NOW and don't mind at all who's toes they have to step on to get it.
Now, I don't want you to think that my husband and I just handed over material things to keep the boys happy. I have a clear conscious as far as that goes. We gave them tons of love, time and attention.
I know I'm rambling here, I guess because I am comparing the words of this book to my life. This was just one section though, of positive parenting methods. I guess I'm just typing about this because it hits close to home, and well, this is the section I just got reading this morning.
Anyway, the book seems to be a great book and I'm sure it will be a big part of my parenting methods. Hugs, Jenn
