cigarettes and preschool, wwyd?

I posted this originally on my PDD/Asperger's board. As most of you know, Hayden has high-functioning autism, and he goes to a developmental preschool with children of all disabilities, and typical children. The abbrevation nt means neurotypical.

First off, I want to say that this post is not meant to offend any smoker, these are just my opinions.

Ds goes to a developmental preschool, thru the school district. Some of the parents smoke on the school grounds. They pull into the parking lot w/ a cig in their mouth w/ their child in the car no less. And some of them smoke right up until they enter the school. Every other school in the district has a no smoking on school grounds policy, why doesn't the preschool? My son has asthma, and even if he didn't, I would not want him around smoke. Not to mention the children in his class who reak of cig. smoke smell b/c their parents choose to be idiots and poison their little lungs.

I mentioned something to one of his teachers, and she agreed with me, and said she would say something to the director. The director said that since its outside, she doesn't see it as a problem. Teacher said she would tell the director that I wanted to speak to her about it.

WWYD? Am I being crazy? Shouldn't all schools have a no smoking on school grounds policy? Not only to set a good example for the kids (the are nt kids at this school too), but to put their health first? Ds is not the only one with asthma there. What should I say to the director? I'm not so good with words.

TIA, Chrissy

Our state just passed a smoking law that prohibits smoking in/near ANY public building.

I completely agree with you. I have asthma and smoking outside bothers me. My brother smokes and I even make him leave his coat in the car when he visits.

I think at least all schools should be smoke free. Whether a parent thinks its ok to smoke around their kids or not they should not smoke around other children.

Update already.....Why do I always feel like I'm losing? The director called me, and after I told her my opinion, she said that she would talk to the exec. director, but she didn't think the policy would change. The preschool is not part of the public school district, they are just contracted by the district. Why can't the kids just be put first? Why am I being made to feel like I am wrong?? I'm upset and there isn't anything I can do about it. I'm not any kind of activist, but sometimes I wish I was.

I'm suprised they dont have a no-smoking on school grounds policy. Can you go directly to the school board and complain to them? or a local newspaper and write a letter to them to put in the "opinions" column or whatever its called?

That is too bad that parents don't put children first. I can't believe the director would blow you off like that. Its a law in my state too that now smoking on school grounds. I wish you luck in fighting this. I think it is a good fight to fight if you know what I mean.

Wow! In my state(GA), if you even have a pack of cigarettes on your person, in your car, within 100 feet of a school, you can get a ticket. I don't know how well they enforce it, but I do know that when I was teaching I NEVER saw anyone on any school grounds smoking.
It's the same way with hospitals here--no smoking within 100 feet of ANY entrance. I'm not sure what the policies are at daycares, but I would think they are similar.
Common sense should prevail on this one--parents should leave the smokes in the car at least!
Fight for what you believe in--I'm sure there are other parents who feel the same as you!
