cigarettes and preschool, wwyd?

I posted this originally on my PDD/Asperger's board. As most of you know, Hayden has high-functioning autism, and he goes to a developmental preschool with children of all disabilities, and typical children. The abbrevation nt means neurotypical.

First off, I want to say that this post is not meant to offend any smoker, these are just my opinions.

Ds goes to a developmental preschool, thru the school district. Some of the parents smoke on the school grounds. They pull into the parking lot w/ a cig in their mouth w/ their child in the car no less. And some of them smoke right up until they enter the school. Every other school in the district has a no smoking on school grounds policy, why doesn't the preschool? My son has asthma, and even if he didn't, I would not want him around smoke. Not to mention the children in his class who reak of cig. smoke smell b/c their parents choose to be idiots and poison their little lungs.

I mentioned something to one of his teachers, and she agreed with me, and said she would say something to the director. The director said that since its outside, she doesn't see it as a problem. Teacher said she would tell the director that I wanted to speak to her about it.

WWYD? Am I being crazy? Shouldn't all schools have a no smoking on school grounds policy? Not only to set a good example for the kids (the are nt kids at this school too), but to put their health first? Ds is not the only one with asthma there. What should I say to the director? I'm not so good with words.

TIA, Chrissy

I'm very anti-smoking. I can't stand the look of it, the smell of it, anything! I definitely agree that this is a situation that requires further action. I feel so bad for kids that are exposed to cigarette smoke. Don't the parents understand yet how dangerous it is to their developing bodies? It's all over magazines, TV, the radio . . . all of these commercials to not smoke around kids, take it outside, you know? AHHH! Now I'm on a rampage. :)

Good luck in your pursuit, Chrissy. Let us know when/what you decide to do.

Chrissy it is a federal law that all federally funded schools have a strict no smoking policy.

Thanks Ana, and everyone else who replied. I'm in no way an activist, and I often keep quiet to appease others. This, however, is not over. I am NOT the one who is wrong. I just have to think how I am going to handle this. Hayden has 1 1/2 years left, then Mason will go there for another 2 years.

For sure you shouldn't be able to smoke at or near a school. I come from Australia and they have introduced new smoking laws which ban smoking in or near any facility or the entrance. You have to be a certain distance away or your get a big fine. Mind you I do still see some people smoking but not as many. There is also a bill trying to get through parliament that outlaws smoking in cars with children!!! That will be wonderful if introduced.

I used to be a smoker but gave up when I got preggers with my first child. My stomach literally turns when I see pregnant women smoking. I can't understand how they can feel a little person moving around in their stomach and suck on a cigarette.

My best friend smoked through all 3 of her pregnancies she did it once in front of me and I went and got my dd and put her on her lap. When she asked me what the hell I was doing I said "why don't you blow it straight into her face". She looked at me like I was crazy and put my dd down. I said "so you won't smoke around my child but you are prepared to put that poison directly into your childs bloodstream". She has never lit up, while she was pregnant, around me since.
