How do you deal with small children who constantly interrupt?
In our house, we stop, remind them that someone else is talking and they need to wait, and continue with the other conversation. If they interrupt again, I'll touch them on the head to let them know that I know they're there, and continue my conversation without responding verbally. If they continue to interrupt, I will excuse myself for a minute to the other person, tell the child they need to wait, explain why, and send them to another room. It doesn't always work, but it's better than nothing. Hope this helps!
I've got one (an interrupter, that is). Well, I have two, but the 5YO is definitely way more out of control than the 9YO. With the 9YO, I just look at him and he knows he's overstepping. With the 5YO, I have to remind her that I'm having a conversation with someone and she needs to wait her turn. It's definitely tough and irritating.
Oh, I've also flat out denied her request (whatever it may be) if she still interrupts after two reminders. I've told her that if she wants to wait her turn to talk, then I'll listen. After a while, I'll let her ask for the same thing again and only allow it if she's asked politely and not interrupted. I know it's hard for the younger ones because everything is just so SUPER important to them!
It definitely is hard for them! Monster just turned 3 and everything is urgent to him. Ineedmilkineedmilkineedmiiiiiiiilk. Getting him not to interrupt is beyond tough.
I think it's also important to make sure you go directly to them once your conversation is done and ask them what they were wanting, and not get distracted. It's another way that we can remind them that what they want to say is important, too, even if they do have to wait.
