hi guys, I gathered from postings that DD means baby and DH means husband. May I ask why? And are there more abbreviations that a new-comers should know about?

I use it to just spend less time posting.
It is easier to just abbreviate then right the whole word out sometimes.

Ok, I will finally say something that I've been dying to say for a long time, since I wasn't the one who brought it up. . .

I know that it's a type of shorthand, I understand that it may well make typing a message a TINY bit faster, but the fact that a lot of people seem to have completely foregone the English language in favor of internet lingo makes me insane!!! LOL! I read an article about a girl in High School who wrote her entire term paper, and the teacher couldn't read it--he thought maybe the girl was dyslexic, or partially illiterate, until a colleague looked at the paper and explained that it was written all in internet shorthand. They posted the paper, and it was hilarious! It doesnt' bother me so much here--the people using the shorthand obviously HAVE the ability to write in English, but are just using the lingo to shorten typing, but on some boards, I truly wonder if the people COULD write the sentences out in comprehensible English!! It's not just shorthand in some places--the actual sentence structure is gone, replaced by strung together "shorthand thoughts". . . UGH. I read over some letter written home by Civil War soldiers (mind you, most of whom were home schooled just briefly by untrained relatives at best) and then compared them to some of the letters that are coming home now. . .well, let's just say that apparantly 150 years has reduced the amount on the average soldier's mind. It was just sad, lol.

Ok, I've done my prissy venting LOL--don't get offended, I'm just an English language snob. . . :)

I'll see if I can track down the full paper online again, but I found the original CNN/AP article that led me to it--and this is the part of the article that included a section of the paper--see if you can figure it out before you read the translation :)

"I could not believe what I was seeing. The page was riddled with hieroglyphics, many of which I simply could not translate," the teacher told the newspaper.

The girl's essay began: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc."

Which in translation from text messaging shorthand would read: "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It's a great place."

I found it online again with more of the text, and it only got worse from there LOL!

I'm glad that the moms around here seem to at least make it deciperable hehehe!

Hey, I just had an epiphany. . . I am getting soooooo old LOL!
