Had an interesting wknd. The school phoned me just as i was leaving house to pick up kids. My 9 yr old dd was red all over, itching with the hives.
Took her home, gave her benadryl and an oatmeal bath- rash mostly disappeared-= except for one area on her tail bone- looked like a fly bite and a big one. No other symptoms just itching and rash. Made her drink lots of water to flush anything out of system, kept giving benadryl and oatmeal baths. Rash mostly faded, but started to re-appear as benadryl wore off.
Strange for here. It has been about 15 C last few days (about 65 F). Normally it is below freezing and we might have snow. Apparently a couple of very large flies (deer flies) were flying around school on Friday. No cold weather to kill the flies.
Anyway dd is fine, at school today with no rash. I am worn out. Her brother used to react badly to mosquito bites, but first time for dd. She is very fair with white blonde hair and blue eyes- I think she looks worse than most.
Luckily for me, my kids seem to get sick at the end of week, we nurse them over wknd and back to school on Monday. I wish we could have a wknd with no one sick. Not much luck with 2 adults and 4 kids.

I hope she feels better soon and it does not happen again.
Youd did awesome on knowing what to do.
bless her heart! I've never had hives, so I didn't realize you could do an oatmeal bath for that too. That's good info to have in case I ever need it. Sending lots of prayers for some healthy, fun filled weekends!!!!
(((((((HUGS))))))))
Thanks for the praise and the prayers
I worked at a children's summer camp- most summers I roomed at camp hospital with the nurse- so you learn a lot of remedies.
I suppose we could have gone to doctor- but my experience is that you wait a long time and then the advise isn't much different than what you would do anyway.
If she was vomiting or nauseous or dizzy or had a temp i might have taken her. But she was just really itchy and red all over. and you could sort of see the bite (or sting).
DD is a pretty good patient too. She doesn't complain a lot and understands when you explain things to her. Now her older brother doesn't get sick often, but he's just like his dad- a sniffle and he's dying.

"he's just like his dad- a sniffle and he's dying"
