My mom recently told me that if I put cereal in Haylei's formula then then she'll sleep through the night. I'm actually breastfeeding but my mom said that if I just gave her a cereal formula combintion before I put her down to bed then she'd not wake up during the night. I was wondering if any of you ladies have tried this? did if work?

XOXO,

Shelby

It is a myth...a very popular myth that many swear by, but it's still a myth. If anything, it might actually cause your baby to get an upset tummy, ESPECIALLY if your baby is breastfed. Formula/cereal are much harsher on a baby's tummy than breastmilk, especially if baby is not used to it. I have even read it recently in a Parents magazine that it has been proven false.

It's a myth. Again, one that many swear by, but a myth. It can also be dangerous for baby. Some babies can choke on the cereal. Sounds silly, but they can. It can also upset baby's tummy, especially if they are drinking breast milk, and that will keep baby (and you) up all night.

Babies wake in the night. It's normal. Many older generations swear their kids slept through the night at 2 weeks or something. LOL! No way. Some babies wake a lot, others sleep more. They are all different just as we are. If you are breastfeeding, the best thing you can do is feed on demand and baby will be happy.

Sorry if you're not getting enough sleep! Can baby sleep with or near you? Then maybe it wont be so bad at night?

Hope things go better for you.

My sons doctor and the people at the WIC office all told me absolutely DO NOT put cereal in the formula. My sisters and my cousin were all told the same thing. The cereal and the formula will sit heavier in the baby's tummy, but could also cause an upset stomach, or there may even be sensitivity to either of those 2 things, and if your baby hasnt had either then you run into the problemof not knowing which thing(cereal or formla) caused the problem.

Haylei will be a month old on the 12th. She sleeps in her nursery but I'm going to buy a bassinat(sp) so she can sleep in our room. I don't think I'm going to try this little tip my mom gave me. Sounds to risky!

thank you all

No, at a month old I would not introduce cereal to a breast fed baby.

You can try a co-sleeper and that might work well. They are a bit more expensive than a bassinet, but they will last longer as they are bigger.

Girlfriend, babies do not sleep through the night at one month old. I really doubt that the people who say that their babies slept through the night this young are true. Once in a long while you get a baby who sleeps well from the get go, but they are the exception, not the rule. Catch a nap when you can in the daytime and forget the housework. Get your husband, friend, mother or a cleaning woman to help for a while.

At 6 months or so, when you are already introducing other foods, then I might try it. But now she is way too young for that.

Thought I might throw my $.02 in here. I have three kids~ all of which have blessedly slept thru the night starting at about 6 weeks. My 1st DS had reflux so we were told to put a little cereal in his formula. It helped with the reflux but did make him constipated and very unhappy. I gave my baby cereal starting at about 2.5 months~ but he has always been formula fed~ I wouldn't do it to a BF baby.

Hi,how old is your daughter? My pediatrician said not to give cereal to my son until he was 4 months old. And even then he did not sleep through the night until he was 8 months old. I would make sure she is ready, especially since you're breastfeeding. The formula could upset her stomach. And also my son's doctor told me never to put the cereal in a bottle,it could form a choking hazard. So be sure she can eat well from a spoon. Ok hope I have helped some. Good luck.

Depends on the baby. Many of our Mothers did this...but although it may help your baby sleep through the night...it is not a healthy option. If your baby is breastfeeding exclusively there is a very good chance that switching suddenly to a pablum/formula combo will cause gastric distress...and your baby will be up all night screaming. If you don't mind me asking..how old is your infant?
