Getting a cellphone

I know it does not sound so exciting, but this would be the first time we have owned a cell phone. With Chris' work, we need one so he can call off the boat and it would be nice if I had one in case Andrew needed me at school or emergency on the road.
Anyways, suggestions on the right service would be helpful.

Mel,
I am so excited for you...I know that Verizon and Cingular have good reception in most areas, and I have had both in the past, but I would go online and check out the coverage areas for your area and make sure that it is on the map. Cingular has carryover and that is what we have now and it is $10 cheaper than Verizon for 2 phones (about $70/month for 500 minutes total). Verizon ran us $80 for 400 minutes, but had more reception in the boonies (I live in the mountains, so that can be almost anywhere here...lol) Both of these have unlimited mobile to mobile and unlimited night and weekend minutes (mobile to mobile as long as it is with the same carrier). Anyway, I know there are others and I would just check them out online. I know Suncom advertises the NO FEES thing, but we can't get that service where I live. It might be something to check on as well. Good luck and I hope that helps.

That's great Mel! We were some of the last on the planet to get a cell phone, too. We just didn't want another bill, but then we had a problem once where Nikki got sick at school and they couldn't get a hold of me. We went out the next day and bought one.
As far as service goes, It can be different depending on where you live. We have cingular and it works great, though.

Kyle works for a major mobile phone company (used to be a tech, now he's in human resources), so I'm kind of partial LOL.
We haven't even had a house phone in 3-4 years because we use our cels and have cable internet. It's nice when you are out and someone needs to get hold of you.
I will tell you this, Sanyo makes excellent phones, and the techs say those are the best to get. Also, make sure you turn your phone off and on every day to refresh your connection with the tower for optimum service. If you need to talk on your phone while it is charging, make sure it is plugged into a surge protecter.
Have fun!
Excited for you, too, Mel. You'll wonder how you ever survived without one! We got one a few years ago, before we moved out here. Katie was going to school here, but we lived about 45 mins. away at the time. To make me more accessible and if something happened on the road, while I was driving here back and forth, we got one. We have really appreciated it since. We did have Verizon at first, and it worked great in the big city, but out here in the country, we had poor reception, if any. We went to the local cell provider here (they carry many providers) and they recommended U.S. Cellular. We have had good luck with them. I'd check out someone like that.
Have fun with the new phone!!
