Grocery Store Etiquette?

You know how you run into someone at the grocery store, you chat a little, then go about the rest of your shopping, but then you pass the same person another time or two? What do you say to that person the next time, if anything? Do you just ignore them or just smile; make a witty comment? I've had these experiences more than once (usually the same people) and I just say something silly, feeling silly and awkward. Recently however, I saw a friend's mother-in-law. We chatted very briefly then moved on to our own shopping. I passed her again and I smiled and said, "I thought I'd see you again," or something to that effect. She just kind of looked at me out of the corner of her eye with a half smile and said nothing. I don't know her very well, but have met her on many occasions over the past several years. Just thought this would make for interesting discussion. What do you all think about this that I call "grocery store etiquette?"

Oh, I hate when that happens! You talk to someone and have nothing left to say, but when you see them again you feel almost compelled to say something else! When it's someone u don't know very well it's even more awkward. I usually just smile and say hi again.

I have had this happen as well.
I know what I am going to say seems mean, but I just keep trucking, I don't keep saying something when I see them.
Makes it easy just to keep going and not feel bad or uncomfortable.

LOL...this happened to me about a month ago. We ran into a family that had a son on our kids football team. We chated for a bit then went on our way. Then we kept running across eachother on every single isle. The first couple of isles I just smiled, but it started getting uncomfortable because our kids would make jokes everytime they passed eachother. I think we mutually started doing the "I am busy reading and looking at this product and can't see you" routine. LOL

Traci, you are too funny.
I have done that before, or I use talking to my kids as well.
