Haircuts at home?

I've been thinking about trying my hand at cutting DS's hair myself.  He likes to keep his hair pretty short, so that means a haircut every 3 or 4 weeks.  After a while, that can add up so I'm thinking about buying a set of clippers, thinning shears, and good scissors to just cut it myself.  Has anyone here ever cut their kids' hair?  If so, do you have any tips?

Buy the clippers and buzz it.  Make sure you leave it a little longer on the top than on the sides.  With DH I use two clipper sizes different.  And definitely start longer -- you can always cut more off, but wearing a toque during the spring looks a little funny.

I cut my first DDs hair just before her first birthday, but I have not cut it myself since then. But personally I think it's easier with boys hair. I've cut my nephews hair on several occasions with no problem. But I would recommend never cutting it as short as he wants it to be at first. For some reason it always ends up being too short. Start it out a little longer and go from there bit by bit.
