I make the kids pick early so I can make the costumes as needed.
Alex (9) wants to be Donkey Kong, Nathan (7) I talked into Jack Sparrow since he has the hat/wig and sword, Luke (almost 4) want to be a person from Tron, and I picked Patrick Star (from Sponge Bob) for JT.
I'm most of the way done with Alex and JTs. Nathan I still need to make the vest and shirt and Luke I'm just painting glow in the dark designs on a black turtleneck and black pants.
Well it is Halloween, so I guess they want to be scary, Jen! My LO doesn't get a choice yet (will be 1 yr that weekend) so his dad decided on a sock monkey. I ordered a hat from Etsy and I need to get the fabric to make the rest. I'm just going to make some zippered pajamas that he can use for actual pajamas after Halloween.
I love baby costumes. DS was a snow monkey for his first Halloween. The poor kid absolutely hated his costume, or the headpiece at least. He was adorable, though.
You have to post a photo of your little sock monkey! How long do you think it will take you to make the costume?
That is what I told him because he bought the hat with the hair at the Disney store when we were on vacation this summer which looks really great. I did find glow in the dark paint and it is even purple which is what he wanted. They have the Tron game for the Wii and his guy in the game is purple so that is what he wanted.
Well I got about 75% done in 3 hours this morning (while he napped) but now my sewing machine is jamming up so I'm taking a break. I'm guessing I've got about 45 minutes of work left to do on it. I have to say thought that it's looking pretty darn cute!
That is great! You'll have to post pictures when you are done, it sounds so cute! Do you do a lot of other sewing? I love making the kids costumes, it is something my mom always did and hopefully my kids will appreciate it. The fabric store however is very dangerous place, I went in for 2 little things of paint and came out with $25 in fabric to make robes for the kids for Christmas. I couldn't help it, the fabric was normally $11 and on sale for $4, how could I not get it :)
I normally don't sew much except baby blankets for shower gifts and the occasional repair but I've always looked forward to making my kids' Halloween costumes. My mom taught me to sew when I was a kid and I did a lot of sewing for 4-H projects. I see myself sewing a lot more now though. I did get my machine un-jammed so I guess I'd better take advantage of nap time and go finish sewing the cuffs on! :) I'll get pics up as soon as I can!
Done!! Here's my little guy's sock monkey costume. I found the hat on Etsy and made the rest. I'm feeling pretty full of myself right now! Its been a long time (like 15 years) since I made anything so ambitious. First zipper I've ever done too! Turns out it wasn't too hard. I had to take the sleeves off cause I put them on upside down (not paying attention) but other than that, between youtube videos and inspecting pajamas that he already has, it was actually not too difficult. The tail is just safety pinned on so that it will be easily removable when this outfit becomes pajamas after Halloween.
