***HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARYS***

My middle name is Karis. That's not a name you hear much. My parents are from Greece, and it's a Greek name. Interesting that you named your DD that (with a different spelling from mine).

I hope she has a *wonderful* day!! You should celebrate too! You brought her into the world :)

I don't mean any offense by this question, but I'm wondering why you're taking away her pacifier if she loves it so much? I'm one to let my kids keep their attachment items. I figure they won't be graduating college or walking down the wedding aisle with them, so who cares? My 4 year-old sucks his thumb with a ratty blanket he calls "Badda". People have told me that sucking his thumb will push out his adult teeth, but my DH is a physician, and said that's really more genetics; and the dentist agreed that it shouldn't cause significant damage. So I say, suck away! Whatever helps him sleep through the night & process the little emotional bumps of childhood. But that's just my 2 cents and I'm probably in the minority of moms thinking this way. I certainly don't want to start any debate here, I was just wondering. . .

I hope you all have a great birthday celebration!

Good luck with that. We tell Justin he can have Badda & suck his thumb at home, or when he's alone with us, but with people outside the family, he needs to keep his hands out of his mouth.

I'm glad you didn't take offense. My mom (whom I have a tangled relationship with) came over a month or so ago & Justin had a cold and was curled up on the couch with Badda sucking his thumb. She made some disparaging comments about Badda, and told me to throw it out in front of Justin. Justin looked at me with horror, and I reassured him later that I would do no such thing.

When I told my DH, he told me a story about when he was 5 years old. His mom went to the hospital to give birth to his youngest sister. THis is in the '70s when moms were in the hospital a week having babies. He & his siblings went to stay with his grandparents. He had a favorite bear that he took with him. His grandfather was very "old school" and told him he was too old to have the bear, and took it from him. He was only 5! My DH said all week he cried himself to sleep for his bear and for his mom. When it was time to go home, he couldn't find his bear. He was ashamed to ask or tell anyone, because he wanted to be a "Big Boy". He never got his bear back. He said for a few years, he used to comfort himself at night putting himself to sleep by making up adventure stories that his bear was having without him. And it was so traumatic for him, that 32 years later, he still recalls it vividly!!

When he told me that story, I realized again how much power we have over our children & how much we can affect their little lives both positively and negatively without meaning to. I felt so bad for Michael, and wanted to go out and buy him a bear ;) In fact, I think I'm going to go to Build-a-Bear and get him a "Doctor Bear" to put in his office, LOL! I'm not even kidding. My kids will get a kick out of it! I don't think his grandfather meant to hurt him in any way, but he did. I never mean to hurt my kids but I'm sure I do all the time. We do our best, try our best and hope for the best.

I pass no judgement on you for your decision. I agree that it's better not to have a pacifier, or suck your thumb at 3. I guess all I meant was that their little hearts are so delicate, and more important than their "attachment items." Good luck to you, and let me know how it goes!!
