Head lice help!

Hi! I'm a lurker but really need to talk to other sahm's. Me, my dd and ds all have head lice. I found them on my dd last Friday. I am treating and picking at everyone. I have a one year old that I am praying doesn't get it. I'm so tired of all the cleaning, washing, and picking. I really need some encouragement. Does anyone have any success stories from dealing with this? A lot of what I read online is discouraging, talking about how hard they are to get rid of. TIA

I have never had the problem myself but where I used to work we had to deal with them a lot.

I lurk here but thought I would jump in to help. We had lice once, it was so nasty! I was always terrified before it happened that we would never get rid of it but we did pretty easily. First off I have four boys and only two of them got it but we treated their heads with rid and then used the shortest attatchement on the clippers to cut all 4 boys hair--and my husbands. (not much help with you or your dd) then I washed everything I could wash in the machine with HOT water and dried in a hot dryer. We took it all to the laundry mat so we didn't infect anything new--a couple of things were ruined in the hot dryer but I was okay with that, I didn't want any lice to survive. Then I vaccumed the whole house including mattressed and cushions and pillows then I sprayed the spray that kills the little buggers. I also put all of the stuffed animals into a large garbage bag and tied it tightly and left it outside in the shed for 6 months then when I brought them in I washed them in the machine. It was a lot of work but it did get rid of them. HTH,

With a few shampoos with the RID you should be able to get rid of them fairly easily. The kit ranges from about $10-20 and you can get it at any store like WalMart or the grocery store. We had a head lice scare at my previous work where one girl had it and we all got those kits to wash our hair just in case. I was pregnant so I bought the kit in case I started itching but I never came down with it. She did the wash once, didn't find any more afterwards, but did it again a few days later just to be sure she got all of the eggs. I still have my kit somewhere around here that I never had to use.

I'm sorry you all have gotten that. Just make sure to wash all sheets, bedspreads, blankets, etc and get the fabric spray to spray on the couches and chairs because lice is so easily transferable. Like in the case of my friend, she got it at the movies. Of all places! Good luck!

We were told when we got lice that if we didn't have it yet we could wash our hair with rid and that would help prevent it. My 16 year old niece was living with us at the time and we both treated our hair and neither of us got it.

Thanks for all your encouragement and advice. I know we'll get past this. Sometimes it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel though. I like reading the posts on this board and plan on joining in more!
