How to label toys?

I'd like to label all our shovels, buckets, balls etc. but need a good way to do it. I don't want to use either of my dd's first names because they will say "Its mine" and refuse to share with the other one. They have different last names, so that's not an option either. Is there some other way to label these things as so other kids don't take them? ODD will give up and let other kids take her things if she can't prove it's hers, and I'm tired of dealing with 3 and 4 yo's playing outside by themselves who think they can do whatever they want.

Here is how I label my kids things. I use color coded permanent markers. I make a circle of color on the bottom or inside, make it fairly large for outside items so there is no doubt for other kids that it is there. I have lots of kids during summer and use color coded everything, towels, cups, wash cloths ect.

Hope this helps

Actually, you both were quite helpful and I appreciate it. I am considering putting both of thier first names on there, or shapes that dd should have learned in kdg this year. Can you believe they are supposed to know things like parallelogram, octagon etc? I was shocked!
