a cough suppose to last? Dalton has had one now for over a week. He has some sneezing and a little bit of a runny nose. I was just wondering how long will the cough last? I also gave him some meds but stopped wanting his body to take care of it on its own.
sounds like a cold Mel... you can give him some cough & cold medicine, but make sure you don't give him any antihistamine... it can make the congestion worse. A cough can sometimes last for weeks even after illness is gone. Just watch for other symptoms... if he starts coughing up mucous, his chest sounds like it's rattling, or his lips or fingernails turn blue, get him to the Dr. Hope he feels better soon!
that's a good question Mel. with our ped. she always says to bring the boys in if their coughs last over a week, just to make sure it's nothing too serious that may need antibiotics or stronger meds. Does he seem to be not feeling too well? Hope he feels better soon. (((((((((Dalton)))))))))
I usually get them to the doc if the cough lasts longer than 2 weeks. Every year we get a lower respiratory virus that lasts for weeks and weeks. Last winter it started mid October and lasted till almost mid December. Our peds said it was just a bug going around and the cough could last as long as 5-6 weeks. The year before it was a late winter bug. It could be allergies too, though. Jenny just developed a cough out of nowhere, a sign her allergies are acting up. Her cute little nose never runs, it all drains down the back of her throat.
He does have a very LOW grade fever of 99.2. So I am not sure if that is because of the cold or he is getting what Chris had over the last 2 days. I guess I will wait till Friday and see what happens. I take him in and the dr says there is nothing to do most of the time.
That always happens to me, too, Mel. I hate taking them to the doctor only to find out I've wasted my time, but it's better to be safe than sorry, I think. Ds doesn't have pain with ear infections, which makes detecting them hard for me. If he developes a fever out of nowhere after having a longterm respiratory virus it's usually a no brainer, but sometimes I'm wrong. He was the first to get sick last october and the last to get over it. I kept waiting for that nose to quit running and it never did. They finally put him on antibiotics to get rid of his sinus infection and (surprise!) ear infection in December. We've been really healthy ever since (knock on wood!!). We got all the kids their flu shots this year and it really paid off. Nikki was one of only two in her class who didn't miss several days of school in march with the flu. There were days her class was almost empty!
Anyway, I think your right to wait till friday and then take him if he's not better. I hate going into the weekend uncertain of whether one of mine needs to see the doc or not. Nothing stinks more than having to go to an urgent care over the weekend.
Hope he feels better soon!
