Before I had kids I was a preschool teacher. When the baby is 2 (she's 10 months now), I will start teaching again and will be her teacher in the 2-year-old preschool class. Her brothers are now 7 and 4 1/2 and so I will want to be home when they get home from school so I think I will just teach a morning class.
I plan to be here till Hunter is 40......just kidding!! I will probably go back to work on a part time basis when he is in first grade. I still want to be available to him for class trips and stuff. In my field I am lucky I can work my own hours and decide how much I work. But I am waiting for Ed McMahon to stop by with my $1,000,000,000.00 check so then I would not have to work again ( ahhh dream'in is good).
I plan to be at home with them always..even when I do start working again. I am hoping that when Jacob (20 months) starts school I will be finished with my B.S.N and plan to work 3rd shift, 12 hr shifts Friday, Sat., and Sun. nights. Which would mean I would be home all during the week with them and I could still have my full time career with extra money for retirement and college. I think its the best of both worlds. And I can't say that when I finally do get the extra income and pay our way out of debt that I wanted have the tubal reversed and go for one more! hehe
I am really not sure what the future holds for me. My husband wants me to work once Dalton is school age. But if I homeschool, that wont work. I really do not want to work. I want to be here for them when school ends (if they are still in school) I want to be there if they need to be picked up for being sick. I guess in a few years, I will know for sure.
I plan to stay at home until all of my kids are in school, and so far we only have 1! So, we definantely want one more if not 2. But, I'm the kind of person that can't sit at home all day and will definantely go back to work part-time and only working from about 8-1. I use to work in a dr.'s office and my uncle is a dr. there, so he lets me work whatever hours I want:)
This is a tough question for me. Part of me wants to stay home forever and the other part of me really wants to get back into the "real world". I love being there for my kids, but as they're getting older (4 and 6) I really want to have something for myself too. I'm just not sure what that is. I'd have a hard time going back to the corporate world since I still want to be there for my kids. Most companies aren't very receptive to summers off : ) What I'd really like to do is go back and get my masters in school counseling. I'm interested to hear what you other mommies are planning to do. Wendy
I really thought that as soon as my son was old enough for preschool, I would go back. I am a teacher and was planning to teach at his school until he hit high school; then I would stay in middle school as I hate teaching high school! LOL
However, I am not sure when or even if I will go back ever. Even though my son is in school, he still needs me. I am there if he is sick, to volunteer at his school, and to drop him off and pick him up. And when we are home, I am able to be there for him. When I was teaching I had "homework" that would take away from my family.
I'm planning on being a stay at home mom for at least the next 14 years. I am homeschooling and hope to continue through their high school years. We only have two kids now but are considering a third so it may be more than 14 years. What a long commitment!
A really tough question for me. I would like to stay home until DS (10 mo.) starts school in a few years but I don't know if that will happen. First, DH isn't that excited about my staying home-don't get me wrong he's not overly negative but makes comments about how much better it will be when we have 2 incomes, spent most of last year (1st year I stayed home) commenting on job opportunities. He also doesn't really seem to value a lot of home type things-prefers restaurants over home cooking, could care less about cleaning, finds an evening at home with the family very, very boring, etc. He does not see any particular benefits to staying home for the child either, just thinks if I want to do it well, that's O.K.
Second, I'm working on finishing a Ph.D. and I can't imagine having put all the effort into the coursework/writing and then not teaching. Problem is, DH & I have our degrees in the same field and both want to teach so job opportunities are slim. If a job with my specialty came open in DH's department I would probably want to apply. The good news for me is that isn't happening this year so at the very earliest DS would be 2 1/2. I currently teach 1 class for them and that works out pretty well. Just enough to get me out of the house occasionally and guarantee DH some time with DS. DH is a total workaholic so unless I create space he would simply work 90% of the time and watch football games or play Magic: The gathering with friends the other 10%.
If we're both teaching college there would be some flexibility in terms of having breaks off with our kids including summer and I know some people have taught in the morning, pick up their kids and spend the afternoon with them then finish grading and other academic work at night. A bit of a juggling act but what isn't?
