How much should we pay?

Hi all,
Yes, it's me again with more questions! lol
We are having a babysitter for the first time come tom. and hang while we paint and clean all the things we can't get done with Danny around.
If all works out we hope to have her come on a reg. basis.
I asked her how much she charges and she said "oh, whatever". ;) Really? Your free?! Coool.
How much does everyone pay? We were thinking $4-5 an hour. Tomorrow we'll be here but later it would be nights and she wouldn't really have to do much.
Any ideas?
I can't believe I am even asking this question! Wasn't it just yesterday I was babysitting for $3 an hour! wow....i am guess I am getting old.

I never had very many sitters- i have 4 kids. but last year I paid a girl $5 hour and usually rounded up. The thing is, reliable sitters are hard to find, and you do get what you pay for. It seems funny, but even as moms we sometimes undervalue the value of reliable care for our kids. I have friends who pay someone $50 just to come to their home on a wknd and feed the 2 dogs and walk them.$50 for a couple hours work.
My oldest son is 13 now and has had a babysitter's course. He has started babysitting his siblings- for an hour or 2 at a time, and i am home by 9PM. I also keep my cell phone with me and we talk back and forth. His next oldest sibling is a sister age 9, then comes a 6 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. I will sometimes pay my 9 year old a couple of bucks to be a helper to her brother.
