Hi! I'm back from the hospital, just got back about an hour ago. We had a healthy baby girl - 7 lbs, 11 oz, 20 3/4 inches long. I'll tell y'all how everything went but it could be a bit long so brace yourself.
I got up Monday morning at six to call the Women's Center and make sure everything was a go. They told me that a few women went into labor and they wouldn't be able to induce that morning but would call later in the day if I could come in. So I went back to bed and they called around nine to say we could come in and get things started. I was sooooo nervous!! Chris kept asking me if I was ready and I kept telling him no. :)
Anyway, I got there and about noon they finally got me on the misoprostal which is a tiny little tablet that ripens the cervix and dilates (as many of you may recall I was bummed because I hadn't dilated AT ALL, and that morning I was still not dilated.) Wel for four hours I couldn't do anything because they have to wait four hours to see if the miso worked or not. At four my doc came in and checked and said I was dilated 1-2 and gave me another miso. He stopped back in at six and I had moved up to a 3 and that was when he broke my water. My contractions up until that point were minimal but regular however after that it all changed. They actually started to hurt!! LOL At eight I was having regular, strong contractions and they started me on the pitocin to keep things progressing. Whoa, nelly! They picked up majorly. I was having to close my eyes and breathe through them but I refused to get an epidural until I absolutely needed one.
At ten I finally asked for one but the nurse said I had to have an entire bag of saline in my system before we could call the anethesiologist and at that time I had only half a bag going through my IV. So she jumped it up to get more in my system and called the anethesiologist about ten-thirty. I had my epidural in by eleven thirty (thank God! Because I was in some serious pain.) Then I didn't feel a thing and laid down and started dozing off. The nurse came in about twelve-thirty (Tuesday morning) and checked me and said I was dilated to a five. I was so upset because with the pain of the contractions I would have sworn I was much more dilated than that and I was worried that my epidural would start wearing off by the time I was ready to go. So she put the catheter in at that time and I laid back down to get some more rest.
Almost immediately I started having pains that I thought were in my bladder and my left ovary. Because I got a terrible UTI after my last delivery due to my catheter I assumed that was what it was and called the nurse back. She said it probably had to do with the contractions and sometimes there's an area that you feel the contractions in when you have the epidural. So I rolled to my right side hoping it would lay off and I would be able to get some rest. I laid there for about ten minutes when I started to feel pressure in my rear end. I told Chris and he asked me if he should call the nurse but because it wasn't strong I wasn't sure if I just maybe needed to go you-know-what. Within about twenty minutes (now just before two a.m.) the pressure got really intense and the pain in my side was even stronger so the nurse checked me and I was there. The baby's head was coming down and I was fully dilated and ready to push. So in about an hour I went from being dilated to a 5 to being ready to push. It was crazy. She immediately called my doctor who rushed down and barely got his gown on before I was needing to push.
I did a practice push for a count of five and then was told on my next contraction to push for ten. The doctor said we were going to get this baby out in one contraction and I thought, yeah right. I pushed for an hour with Noah so I thought that was impossible. When the contraction started I pushed and literally pushed her out in under a minute. The best part was - I didn't feel a thing. My epidural was so strong and I was practically numb so she slid right out and they had to tell me to stop pushing once the head came out. LOL I was great. Well worth breathing through all those contractions to have that part be so simple.
She was born at 2:04 a.m. on the 24th. I'll post pictures as soon as I can. She's a beatiful little girl! Thanks for all of your support, girls!! I'll be off for a while probably but I'll check in when I can.
