They chose the German guy. My question is, why do they pick such old men? He is 74 or something like that. Wouldn't you think that electing a 50 or 60 year would be a smarter thing to do? Oh well. Anyway, that's my news for the day! lol

I know very little about the catholic religion...I did think the play by play on television was a little strange. For some reason the commentators kept bringing up betting pools.

this is what I read about him and ww2...

...was called into the auxiliary anti-aircraft service in the last months of World War II. He deserted the Germany army in 1945 and returned to Traunstein, where he was taken prisoner by U.S. troops.

In June 1945, he was released from a U.S. POW camp and returned home, hitching a ride on a milk truck.

From 1946 to 1951, he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Munich and at another school in Freising. He was ordained a priest in 1951.

The most likely reason that an older cardinal was chosen was actually because of the very long length of Pope John Paul's reign. John Paul was Pope for 26 years--in the scope of the papacy, a very very long time. So...a lot of theologians and Catholics feel like they were hedging their bet, so to speak, by choosing someone who was not as likely to serve such a long time. Also, of the "contenders" for the papacy, he is by far the most conservative as to how the hierarchy of the church should operate, and with all of the scandals that the church has faced over the last decade many people felt that the church needed someone who would be rather iron fisted over the level of involvement and control that he will have in the decision making process of the individual dioceses. Grew up VERY Catholic, can you tell LOL :)
