Mac 'n cheese in the microwave. She can read. She can reach the counter safely. The microwave isn't above the stove, it is on the counter. She doesn't have to drain off hot water. So, I got out the box and showed her how to find the microwave directions (I'm glad they have those now, or she would have to use the stove, and I'm not good with that idea). She was so excited. And she did a great job. It will make everything easier this summer. Do you think she is too young to learn things like this? Rose, you have older kids - what do you think?

I think it's awesome, Wendy. Nikki's a very mature 8 and I would let her do that. Esp since they don't have to drain off hot water. Now if only I could get her to like the cheap mac n cheese... all she'll eat is velveta. Maybe if I let her make it herself it'd have more appeal.

It is a great idea. I started cooking with Hanna at the age of 2. She is now a little over 4 yyears old and actually makes her own sandwichs and loves to help with the clean up too. I think it is important for them to help out. It is fun too and messy!! Trish :)

Hi Trish, and welcome! We'd love to learn more about you. Howsabout you go down to the Welcome Mat folder and post an intro? We LOVE newbies. And I think it's great that you jumped in and just started posting. When I started on the board several months ago I never did post in the welcome mat section, I just started posting away and everybody was so nice to me I never left.

Erin

PS if you've been here before and I'm too much of a goober to remember, please forgive me!! It wouldn't be the first time.

How old is she?
I think it is great she is lesarning to help make food. I would just let her know that this does not mean she can cook anything in the microwave

My son makes mac and cheese on the stove. I just don't let him drain
off the water. Then he will add the milk, butter, and cheese. He makes
it better then I do. I think if you feel comfortable with her making
it then it should be ok.

I've been teaching Natalie how to do things for herself like that. I think it's good for kids... builds their self esteem. Just make sure she knows not to put silverware in the microwave. I caught Hannah trying to nuke something one day and she had left her spoon in there. Thankfully I caught it right after she put it in.
