Keeping the house clean

Hi ladies,
When Danielle was a baby we had someone come to the house once a week to clean and it was fantastic! The rates were reasonable and she did a fantastic job. I placed an ad on craigslist asking for referrals, etc. but I am still wary about inviting a stranger into my home. I work part time in the evenings and am a stay at home Mom by day and even though I only have one child, I find it impossible to keep the house spotlessly clean.
Suggestions, what do you all do?
Thanks in advance,
Monica

I made a calendar for myself with a daily list (dishes, laundry, pick up toys, etc.) and a weekly list.

Thanks for your responses ladies. Dont get me wrong, my house is clean MOST of the time. But I want it to be clean the majority of the time, I feel like my whole day is spent cleaning the house, of course I make time for Danielle lol, anyone relate?

I also make myself a schedule of chores to do each day and also "special projects" that need to get done that month like clean the ceiling fans or de-junk the hall closet. I try to get my chores done in the morning during my daughters nap so I don't have to think about them the rest of the day. Then during her afternoon nap I go around and tidy up the house, and work on one thing from my "special project list". I also do a quick tidy up right before I go to bed. Your morning starts off so much better if the house is picked up and the kitchen counters are clear of dirty dishes.
With this schedule I don't feel like I am cleaning all the time, just two little sessions. Then I am able to spend the rest of the day with my daughter, when is most important.

I have someone who comes in every two weeks and I love it. I wouldn't mind having them come more often, but I don't want to spend the money.
