Lump in my sons groin area, any advice?

My ds is 10 and had a small lump in his groin area, the dr. put him on an antibiotic and it has gotten bigger since then. So they put him on baxitracin which is a very strong antibiotic and it is still the same but it is red and looks bruised. It doesnt hurt him like it did though.

Any ideas on what is going on?
I hope to get help from you guys.

Thanks
Cyndi (mommy x6)

could it be a boil? If it is, a warm wet washcloth will help relieve the pain and bring it down.

I thought about a cyst or a boil too.
Do you know if a they have a head (pimple) on them?

This is just a lump, no head.
If it is a boil, how do you get rid of it?

They are usually a red/purple lump, with no head. Whatever you do, DON'T pop it! It can cause him to have a full blown outbreak. Warm compresses, cleaning with peroxide, and (I think) epsom salt baths are supposed to help. You might also check with your pharmacist to see if they recommend anything OTC. If it does burst (gray puss & blood... don't panic... it's gross I know!), clean it really well with peroxide and put a bandage over it. Make sure to wash your hands really well afterwards.

How big do boils get?
If it doesnt have a head how does it pop?

This lump is huge, and I mean huge for a lump. It is about 1 in wide and 2 in long. You can see the lump on his leg without touching it. It is hard. He says that if I push on it it doesnt hurt. He also has a slight limp when he walks because of it.

Ive been reading so many things that this could be, I am starting to get worried.

Still sound like a boil?
If so, does it just go away, or does it have to pop?

I've never heard of a boil getting that big... Has the doctor done nothing besides give him antibiotics? On something that big I would thing he would do a biopsy, lumpectomy, try to lance it, or at the very least send him to a dermatologist.

ok I just did a search on the net... it said that boils can range in size from a pea to a golf ball.

If you don't see improvement after a few days on the antibiotic, I would have him rechecked. He may need to switch meds, or like someone else said, see a specialist. good luck and keep us posted! Ann

Has your DR. thought maybe it might be a hernia? Hernia's in that area are NOT uncommon in males. I have 3 friends all who have sons that have had surgery for hernias in that area.

She said it wasnt. But Im begining to wonder if she really know anything. I plan on taking him to my doctor. Maybe he will have more answers.
Im just so tired of "I dont know what it is" I guess I expect more from my pediatritian.
Im not happy with her at all right now.

Believe me I know that feeling well, all too well. I have a wonderfull ped. now, but the one we had before seemed to stop caring about the kids.
Good luck, I hope you get an answer soon.

Seems odd that what they are doing in not making it better and that they are not trying something else.
I hope he is okay.
