I am hurting so much.
I am engorged and trying to pump, but only 1 ounce comes out after doing it for 20-30 minutes and every hour almost.
Is it me? Or is this normal and make take a few days?
I am worried its sitting there and just wont come out and soon it will all dry up cause my body thinks I dont want it.
I have a dr appt tomorrow to see the OB and get some help.

don't worry Mel. It'll come. It takes usually 3-4 full days for the real milk to come in. The first few days if anything comes out, its colostrum, and thats what baby needs right now. It doesnt seem like much, but its extremly high in everything good for Nicholas, and he really doesnt need much at this stage. Keep on pumping, it will come in. What kind of a pump are you using? If its a weak one, or a manual, I'd suggest running out right now, and either buying or renting a hospital grade heavy duty electric pump to get you going. Hang in there!!!

I second the motion of calling the lactation consultant. They are very knowlegeable and helpful!

Also, the hospital grade pumps are way better than anything you can buy in the store. I couldn't afford to rent one and ended up giving up on pumping at a few weeks after Hayden's birth. I wasn't producing enough milk for him and he wasn't gaining weight like he should have been. The pump I bought at Target just wasn't stimulating enough to get more milk going.

And yes, it does take a good 4 (or more) days before the milk comes in. The colostrum is the most important stuff though, so keep doing what you're doing.

Good luck and congrats on your little one!!

Hi Mel! I know it is easier said than done right now, but along with everything the others told you, try to relax! I am sure Baby Nicholas is getting everything he needs and when your milk is ready it will come out in full force! Don't worry about drying up, I think as long as there is some stimulation (nursing or pumping with a good pump) your body will know what it is supposed to do.

Hang in there!

I'm not sure Mel....If you are engorged, you should be able to pump out a lot. Is the baby getting anything when he nurses? I would worry about your supply drying up, it took me like 2 weeks for mine to go away totally.

(((Hugs))) Mel!! I thought that post-partum few days was so hard sometimes. . .

If you're engorged, you have milk. Maybe your pump doesn't have enough suction?? Try getting the baby to suck. If he falls asleep suckling, jiggle him awake, or pull him off, sit him up, burp him, and latch him back on.

Good luck and I'm thinking of you! BTDT even with twins!!

I have a Medela pump in style breastpump.

I am doing it almost every 2 hours for about 20 minutes on both breasts, since it is a electric double pump.

I got a lot more this time I tried then last time, so maybe the milk is finally getting to my nipples

remember also to drink plenty of water, eat oatmeal, and also use a warm wet washcloth on your breast before pumping

(((hugs))) it'll get easier!!!

I dont have much to add to the other posts , but on top of all the other wonderful advice, if you stress a lot, it makes it harder.BTDT. I would watch tv or read a book, take my mind off it, if it doesnt require much attention... Have faith in yourself... and hugss to you !!!!

Mel, Congratulations! I have not been on the board for a few days.

Can I ask...are you trying to exclusively pump? I hope I am not being nosy..sorry if I am. I am on my fourth month of nursing and the first three days were hard for me breastfeeding, and I have done it three times! For some reason with Alekzander my milk came in on the fourth day and it was really hard. I almost gave up.
