Need Advice on haircoloring

Okay now that I am a stay at home mom, I don't feel that I can justify spending $170 on highlights and a haircut anymore. I am curious what other stay at home moms do? I have darkening blonde hair that I had to start highlighting about 6 yrs ago. I haven't gotten a highlight in 3 months and ugh my hair is coming in dark and I even see some grays in there (I am only 31!!) I have never used hair coloring out of a box before and I am really nervous to try, esp because my hair has 2 inch roots of darkness.
Anyway, what does everyone else do - try and justify spending money on haircare or do it at home - Suggestions would be wonderful!!
Thanks

I hear you!
See that is what I am afraid of - horrible color-boxed hair. I haven't done it and am afraid. I thought about letting my harid grow in darker but it really is a horrible color. That dark dirty blonde color - it is not right for me. Maybe I am just used to be a lighter blonde. I was thinking of just getting all over color at my hairdresser. It saves time and money than my highlights. I was spending $95 on highlights alone and they take 2 hrs because my hair is really thick!
any other suggestions??

My hair care is one of my only indulgences. I do my own manacure's and pedicure's and by most everything on sale, but my hair is different.
I pay around 60 to 80 dollars at Tony and Guy's. I love the way they take the time with my hair and advise me on what products and such are right for me. When I was little my mother would always cut my hair short and I hated it. I have long curly hair now that I love!

Well, at the moment I go to a hairdresser to get my highlights done but I haven't always. I have not only used boxed color, but I have used (with help of a friend) boxed highlights. Looked good but I like the way a hairdresser does it better.
Whenever I am not sure of continuing coloring my hair and my grey is showing, I use temporary color, a rinse. Clairol herbal Essences has wonderful colors and they are temporary. It is a great stopgap that looks wonderful and is cheap.
Another thing I do is get my hair highlighted and cut at seperate times. I find that after getting my hair highlighted, it doesn't really need a cut for a few months. The color rejeuvenates my hair.

See if you can find someone who does hair on the side or out of their home. That is what I did and I can still get a great hair color for a fraction of the price! Out-of-the box is cool if you just do a solid color and its easy. If you feel un-easy about it try one with a semi-permanent.
Good Luck

Blonde is one the HARDEST colors to get right on your own (along with red/auburn). If you don't completely fry your hair (which you quite possibly could), then you could end up looking like Malibu Barbie--which is great if you're into that kind of thing, but it sounds like you probably aren't LOL! If you decide to try something, try a level 1 or 2 dye--they are much gentler formulations, and less damaging to you hair typically, and they have the added bonus of washing out in varying number of shampoos (add a few to the number it says on the box to be safe), so if you really aren't very happy, at least it isn't permanent. Two of my friends tried the new "comb through highlights", which cost about $20/box, and I have to tell ya, it was strange--one of them looked great, and the other looked kind of like a skunk. . . If you're using a highlight color close to your own it's not bad, but for more than a few shades, I'd let the professionals do it lol! Tell your hairdresser that you either need to figure out a way to be more economical, or you'll be doing it in the bathroom sink--maybe she can do a more subtle change that will still cover the roots, but not need as much upkeep??
Good luck :)
