Need Advice on haircoloring

Okay now that I am a stay at home mom, I don't feel that I can justify spending $170 on highlights and a haircut anymore. I am curious what other stay at home moms do? I have darkening blonde hair that I had to start highlighting about 6 yrs ago. I haven't gotten a highlight in 3 months and ugh my hair is coming in dark and I even see some grays in there (I am only 31!!) I have never used hair coloring out of a box before and I am really nervous to try, esp because my hair has 2 inch roots of darkness.

Anyway, what does everyone else do - try and justify spending money on haircare or do it at home - Suggestions would be wonderful!!

Thanks

Well I am the biggest chicken to ever walk the earth when it comes to pepole messing with my hair. I hate the high price of a salon as well. So I use what I know works well. First I buy my favorite shampoo and conditioner at the salon. It actually cost less to buy it there then at the store. Many stores are now selling salon shampoos and other products. But I use a small amount and I Justifiy the expence by taking a marker and on the bottom of the product I mark the date that I started to use it. Then when the bottle was empty I looked at the date. My Shampoo was lasting me 14 months. YES NO KIDDING 14 months! I have long thick hair that I wash every other day. So twnety bucks was well spent. Biolage is what I am useing.

Next I use Colour Expert hair color. It is between 14.00 and 20.00 but 3 -5.00 coupons are found almost weekley in the paper or on the web site. (www.makethemwonder.com)
I chose a color that was very close to my own color the first time I used it. THe highlights were easy and didn't make me look like a skunk. It was very suttle and natural looking. The next time 4 mos later I use a color that was a bit lighter than my natural color. Came out even better.

I have always been happy with this coloring product. And if I mess it up I can go to the salon and get it fixed. A virgin rince is not more than 30.00.

I tend to stay away from Fancy salons they tend to come with fancy price tags. Have you ever gone to Penny's or Hudsons, They do a decent job .
