Need some info on hypoactive thyroid

Can any of you help me?

Yesterday, Jett's dr said she wants to have him tested for thyroid issues. She said he could have hypoactive thyroid problems because of a few factors. His weight (I thought he's a good weight, 14lbs 4oz at 9weeks) and the fact that he sleeps all the time, and that he only poops about every 5 days.

I dont think he has a problem, but I'll do the test just to make sure. Anyways, I tried googling it to get info on it, and everything I found was pertaining to dogs lol. Do any of you know anything about this?...or would you care to ask the medicaly inclinded dhs lol?

Hi Lesley. The thyroid hormones are so darned complex I can never remember the ins and outs. I would say, though, that screening babies for thyroid problems is very common and usually they turn out fine and I wouldn't worry at all. I will ask dh what he thinks when he gets home, though.

I have hypothyroidsim, as an adult though---didn't come into full effect till I had my last child.

Some of the major symptoms are unexplained weight gain, tired all the time---which is what you said.

All it is is a blood test that will check his thyroid levels.

I've had hypothyroidism since I was 16. My mom thought it was odd that a 16 y,i, would be as tired as I was, so she took me to the dr. I've been on medication ever since and am fine. I don't think it's anything to worry about either. The thyroid just isn't making enough thyroxine and it has to be supplemented with synthetic thyroxine. I'm not sure how they would treat a baby though. Sorry I don't have much information either. You'd think I would since I've been diagnosed for 21 years! Good luck and don't fret.

Lesley, I don't have any information. I just wanted you to know I was thinking of Jett and sending him prayers and positive thoughts!

Praying for little Jett! Let us know what you find out Lesley.

I wanted to add also, that if he is just constipated (turns red and strains when he has a BM), you can put a little bit of Dark Karo Syrup (make sure it's the dark) in his bottle and it will keep his stools loose.

Lesley, I'll ask my DH when he wakes up, LOL! He worked all night last night & has gone to bed. I'll let you know what he says. When are you getting the test done? And what does the test consist of? Is it a blood test?

(((HUGS))) to you & baby Jett, and try not to worry.

Well dh was no help at all. He's still not overly comfortable with my internet activity and sort of clams up when I try bring it up like that. I will say that Nikki has a friend who was born without a thyroid gland all together and she is perfectly normal. So if that's the worst possible problem, I think I wouldn't worry.
