I was fed up with the whole "let's forget about a Girl Scout bridging ceremony and just have a petals awards & certificates, followed by swimming, fajitas, and margaritas" party, so I sent an email to the leaders expressing my concern, an explanation of what a bridging ceremony is supposed to be and the importance of it, and links to the Girl Scout website & to another troop's site that had pictures of their bridging ceremony.
in a nutshell, I basically pointed out that "their way" was NOT in Girl Scout guidelines, and they probably felt like dummies afterwards, because they are now in agreement that the girls should have a bridging ceremony... go figure. These people were going to take the last $70 of troop money just to spend on fajita meat that the kids wouldn't eat anyway.
Anyway, I'm glad that the girls will have their bridging ceremony, but I'm still irritated...
I've already checked for any troops that are made up of homeschooled girls, and there aren't any... I will be starting my own troop this fall, and I can promise you, these girls will learn about Girl Scout traditions & ceremonies, and things will be done correctly... none of this "fajitas & margaritas, fresh fruit with chocolate fondue, and fried cheese for snacks" yuppity garbage that's meant more for the parents than the girls.
whew I feel better!
ETA: ok I guess I should clarify... at one of the meetings for snacks they served fruit & chocolate fondue & fried cheese... I grew up eating cookies & drinking koolaid for snacks at the meetings. They would have the meetings at whoever's house it was to do snacks that week, and every week it got more and more elaborate... funny we never had it at my house... imagine that.

Desiree, you are frighteningly like me sometimes! LOL! I'm telling you, I would've been a little ticked off myself! Not to mention, using troop money? For THEIR benefit? I'd be tempted to let the Girl Scout office know about their practices. I have a first grade brownie troop and we use an old ice cream bucket (there is that bucket again, LOL!) and send it home with whoever's turn it is for treat. They bring it to the next meeting, filled with a yummy snack - pnut butter crackers, fish crackers, trail mix, etc. The girls get just enough to get them thru the meeting. Sheesh - chocolate fondue? Really now! Who are they trying to impress? O.K., getting down off my soapbox before I get carried away. Good luck with your troop next year! You will be a great leader!!
Hugs,
Wendy
I'm glad that you were able to show them the true spirit of the Girl Scouts and get them to have the bridging ceremony.
I was in Girl Scouts for about 6 months.
The ceremonies are the fun part and should be done. Why have a troop if it is about drinking and parties.
Good luck with starting your own group.
Desiree I think the very first thing you should do with your Girl Scout troop in plan a trip to the wonderful city that Juliett Gordon Low lived when she founded the Girl Scouts in 1912.......
Hmmmmm wonder where that might be?
Of course if you did that you would have to plan to have lunch at the "Lady and Son's"....but then Traci...she would follow you from Texas...(cause you know who she claims is her "real/other" mama!).
Perhaps a walk down River Street......so much to do...and so much for little "Girl Scouts" to learn.....
And the best part is....Guess who else lives in that city?
See...so many reasons to start planning that trip!
LOL
I'm soo glad you said something, thats awesome! I was never in Girl Scouts, but the things that you describe sound ridiculous. Goodluck on starting up your own troop!

ROFL Rhonda!
Yeah I can see me traveling across the country with a bunch of giggly first graders... NOT!
Maybe when they are 14-15 LOL
DYK (ha ha) that one day Natalie's leader was trying to say something about Juliette Gordon Low, got as far as "Juliette" and had a blank stare on her face? She COULDN'T EVEN REMEMBER HER NAME! Much less knew anything about her! I was in shock... talk about Girl Scout blasphemy! LOL
Hey, Rhonda lol about remembering about my "real mom." I spend time with her every day at 12:00 and would love to meet her in person, so a trip would be
Are you a M.O.M-Mom of Many? Find other M.O.M's
What is this--let's out-do each other with the fancy snacks?? Sounds like my community! You go, Bell Mom! :) I'm glad you put your foot down and rang the bell on them!
I was a Brownie for 2 years when I was--like--first & second grade, but never a Girlscout. I was thinking of putting Matthew in Cub Scouts, but haven't done it yet.
