I have been trying to decide what to do with my life, career-wise. I really want to get my bachelors degree, I already have a lot of college credits. It would take me about 2-3 years to get a bachelors degree. Anyway, I really want to keep my house, it's nothing fancy, but it's perfect for me and the kids. If I went for my bachelors I could go to work and make about $10/hr, plus have to go to school. Thats working 40 hours a week, which would be hard plus going to school on top of that and taking care of the kids.
I've also been looking into a technical school to get certified to be a surgical technician. It's good money, about $15/hr, and it's only a 12-15 month program. Plus I will get spousal support from my husband for probably about a year, so I won't have to work in the time it will take me to finish the technical school. And if I make $15/hr, plus my child support money, I will be doing pretty good. I could always sell my house, and move in with my parents and go to school, but I really do not want to do that. I know I'm young, but I need my indepedence.
Im really torn because I want to get my bachelors degree, but right at this moment it's not really possible. If I go end up going to the technical school, I will go get my bachelors once the baby is in school, in about 2 years. So, what do you guys think? Thanks for the opinions!

I think if you want to be a surgical technician, it's a good idea. It's hard to work and go to school at the same time with young kids. I'm going back to get my bachelors once the twins are in first grade. Just be sure there are going to be jobs for you when you're done with the program. I'd call around to hospitals and find out how many surgical technicians they employ, what they're paid, etc (you've probably already done this).

G/L!!

Kate if it where me, I'd go to the tech school for now and get the job. As you mentioned, you are young, and there's no reason that in a few years, once Vinny is in school, that you cant drop your work load to part time, and go back to school for your bachelors degree. I wouldnt move back home, that would be brutal imo lol.

Also, another thought, is who knows what the next 2-3 yrs might bring you. For all you know in 3 yrs you could be happily remarried to a millionaire and have all the time and money to do whatever you want lol!!!

(hey, a girl can dream cant she lol?)

IMO, it sounds like the best thing for you to do, is go to the Tech school. You can always go back when your kids are in school to get your bachelors. Plus it would be so much time away from them with a 40-hr work week AND school. HTH.

Are you set on being a Surgical tech? If not I would look into online schooling. There are a lot of options out there for people to get a degree over the internet. That's how I'm getting my BA in Psychology. It's convinient and it's only going to take me 3 1/2 years in lieu of 4. It may not be a big difference but it is to me considering I have to take a masters and a doctoral program.
Good luck on finding your career and have fun!

I agree with pp - I'd go for the surgical tech, you can always go for your bach. degree when time isn't such an issue.

i agree with the others. Go for the surgical tech. Up until last year, I was working full time, going to university too and looking after hubby and my 4 kids part time. It was HELL.

Now I am a SAHM. Kids grow fast- better to spend some time with them now.
YOu can always continue school later. But you need to be independent and take care of yourself and your children.

But I think most people know what is best for them and what they need to do. Follow your gut.
