playing monopoly

DS (9) received traditional Monopoly for Christmas. We finally got it out yesterday. When I was a kid we didn't play according to all the rules. When we landed on a place, we could choose to buy it or not. We didn't do the mortgage part, auctioning, etc. It seems a little complicated for him to understand what "interest, loaning, mortgage" and all those terms mean. I just want him to be able to make change, count money, etc. Does anybody play this this way?

We played you land on something you can buy it or not. If you needed to mtg it later then you could. We also would put money in the middle for when you land on free parking. We do play by the rules when it comes to buying and selling houses. Even though we know the "real" rules now we still don't play by them all.

We played almst the same way.
It is quite boring doing it the way they say you should play.
We bought what we wanted, didn't buy houses much, unless we wanted to play for days.
I think you should play the way that makes it fun.

we always bought what we wanted (when we landed on it) and if you got one of those colored cards that made you pay taxes or some fee, it always went in the middle for the person who landed on the free parking space. I love that game (not played as it was supposed to be!!!) As an adult, I finally read the rules, and thought screw this!! That's no fun!!!

Do what you think is amussing, as kids, most of us have good memories playing it, even te rules were altered!

Thanks for your responses-I like the idea of putting money in the middle for the free parking-I think we'll play it this way next time! Ann

I haven't read the other posts so forgive me if I repeat. I agree it's pretty complicated. I bought my 6 yr old Monopoly Jr. And I love it. Not many decisions and a focus on money (low denominations). This may be too young for you but I can't see a problem with simplifying and then maybe introducing the more complex rules one or two at a time as the kids get older.
