Hey, y'all. Fil has surgery on one of his eyes today at noon. If he doesn't have the surgery he will go blind in that eye. Afterwards the really difficult part begins. He has to lay *face down* 85% of the time for 7 days!! In order for the back of the eye to heal, he has to keep the fluid that's in his eye, off of it. This would be difficult for anyone, but is made moreso by the fact that he can't lay flat without coughing up a lung. He has emphasima and asbestos poisoning and every night sleeps up right in a recliner, I mean 90 degree angle, not reclined. When he lays flat, the fluid in his lungs sloshes around and he starts coughing. How's his eye going to heal if he's coughing like that?!
He's rigged up a bed in the front room of his house so he can stare straight down at a mirror on the floor and see the TV. He's a very active man, unable to sit still for very long and this is probably going to be torturous for him. But he has a very positive attitude about it. I'm amazed at how he can just accept things like this and go with it. If I'd been through all the things he's been through in the last 5 years or so, I don't think I could be so upbeat. After this is done, he has to have his gall bladder removed, surgery on his prostate, and a hiatal hernia fixed. And still he smiles and is his usual self, irritating the heck out of me and driving me crazy most of the time.
So do what ya do, ladies and send him some prayers and vibes for me. Hopefully the time will fly by for him and he'll be standing upright in no time.

Keep us updated Erin!
Having a good attitude about it all is half the battle... I certainly wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now though poor guy.
WOW! With a positive outlook like that, i'm sure he'll be well in no time.
P's&pt's coming his way, Erin.

Erin, you know he's got our prayers!! How did the surgery go? It's amazing, the resiliency of the human spirit, isn't it? I hope all went well and that his 7 days lying flat go fast. Poor guy!!

Tons of hugs to you and many p&pt's to your fil and the rest of your family
FIL's surgery went well. MIL got to watch the whole thing on a monitor! I don't know if I could do that, especially considering FIL was awake and it was his eye. eeek. But he's at home, now, trying to rest. Dh will go visit probably tomorrow. I'm thinking of going and getting him some books on tape to help him pass the time.
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. They were much appreciated!!
