Question about EEG
| Thu, 08-17-2006 - 10:00pm |
I can't believe I forgot to post this earlier!
Kyle has to have an EEG in the morning, and my kids were screaming when I talked to the nurse the other day. It's been years since I had mine, and I can't remember what he needs to do to prepare. Is there anything other than washing his hair tonight and no styling products?
Does ANYONE know? LOL

Hi Sweetie! I asked Michael for you. He says nothing huge. If Kyle's taking anti-seizure meds (I don't know what the EEG is for), that he should stop taking it a couple of days before if they're measuring for seizure activity. A little late now, right? LOL.
He also said if he takes any other psychotropic meds, like stimulants or anti-depressants, he might not want to take those.
He said maybe to wash his hair tonight, so it's dry, and not to use hair styling products, because that can mess with the results.
And also not to drink caffeine or smoke a few hours before the test.
If it's a sleep-deprived EEG, he says they have you stay awake all night beforehand (without caffeine? HORRORS!! The *sheer ruthlessness* of the medical community astounds me! ;) ).
If they're giving him an EEG for seizures, and they're hoping he has a seizure, and he hasn't taken his meds, Michael says you might want to drive him incase he's not safe to drive due to seizure activity.
Other than that, not much. . . Hope this helps!! And we hope Kyle is OK.
Hugs,
Sofia
thanks Sofia! I really appreciate it!!!
I do remember the nurse saying for him to take his meds like normal, and he washed his hair last night. It was all fuzzy this morning but oh well LOL.
He ended up not coming to bed until 2:30 this morning and got up at 6:30, so I'm sure he'll have no problem sleeping during the test... especially with no coffee ;o)
The reason he has to have it is because when we has 12 he was dx with hydrocephalus... it was completely spontaneous. I always tease him because we did some research a couple of years ago and the only recorded cases of spontaneous hydrocephalus was in in-bred lab mice.
Anyway he has had 15 operations on his head, the last one being 19 years ago. During one of his operations he had hemmorhaging in his brain and if you look at a cat scan, the front part of his frontal lobe is completely black. Honestly it's a miracle that he is doing so well, and he has absolutely dumbfounded the medical profession. During one of his hospital stays his appendix rutpured and he had to have exploratory surgery in his abdomen b/c they didn't realize what was going on. The poison from his appendix was an hour from hitting the tube in his abdomen that led to his shunt. It would have gone directly to his brain and killed him. They re-routed the tube to his chest during the appendectomy. This has actually been a blessing in disguise. Because the tube is in his chest, he is prone to getting bronchitis which is not good, but the occasional coughing puts pressure on the tubes and clears out any blockages that might cause him to have to go back into the hospital for shunt complications.
The reason he has to have the EEG is because of the brain damage. He has occasional seizures at night because his wires "get crossed", and has been on Dilantin for several years. It's been since September 2000 since his last one (thank Heavens), but his neurologist wants to put him on a different medicine.
anyway I'm sorry this turned into a book LOL.
Tell Dr. Michael we appreciate his help!!!!!
Hugs Desiree,
oh bless her heart!!!!! I'll be praying for her too!!!!!
Kyle had a stroke years ago too... he had to completely learn how to walk again, and still loses strength in his hand occasionally.
I completely understand the fear of dying. Trust me... I pray every day that God keeps him healthy... I can't imagine losing him.
Hugs and prayers to all of you! My mom suffers with a seizure disorder. It is completely controlled right now, with medication (Topamax). It was very difficult for her to adjust to this awful medication, but now she is doing very well. She has been very healthy for over a year now, without seizures. My older sister also had seizure problems, as a child. She was diagnosed with epilepsy, but has fortunately grown out of it.
I know how scary these situations are, so I'm praying all goes well. And Rose, if you are reading this, I'll pray for your sister, too. That is sooooo scary!!
Many hugs,
Wendy
God bless Kyle!! I can't believe how much he's been through! I had no idea. I just read Michael your post (I hope you don't mind), and he says he was really lucky with the appendix thing. I hope his EEG went OK today, too.
(((HUGS)))
Oh, and "Dr Michael" says "You're welcome, anytime" :)
