Yesterday I had the privilege of hearing Rachel Joy Scott's dad talk to us at the middle school I am working at. Rachel, if you can recall, was one of the girls killed at Columbine. She apparently was the first one shot. They first shot her in both legs and on her torso. Then as she was crawling for safety (according to her friend that was eating lunch with her outside and also was shot in the leg) the shooter came back and pulled her up by her hair and asked her "do you believe in God" and she replied "you know I do", then he said "then go be with Him" and then shot her in the head. Michael W. Smith wrote a song about her (and Columbine) as well.
Her father since her death has gone around to many schools, Church's, etc telling her story and trying to continue her passion for spreading kindness around the world. She apparently would keep many journals and write poems/stories about kindness. She was also very friendly and compassionate to students that were handicapped, new to the school or those that were picked on by others. I was very moved by the whole thing. I don't think there was one dry eye in the whole cafeteria last night. I immediately came home and shared the story with my children and DH. I bought one of the book's her dad wrote and he signed it for me, but when I went up to him I could not hold back the tears. I just gave him a hug and said "thank you for all that you are doing and I am so sorry for what you have been through". I mean what do you say to someone that has lost their child? I can not even imagine what all of the parents went and are going through. I just wanted to share and also you can check out her site. Maybe some of you have already been to this presentation before.
