Rash on face

I was wondering if any of your kids have had a rash on their face right around their mouths? My DS is 8 mos old and just started Stage 2 foods. He had developed a rash around his mouth. It is spotty looking but it's not raised or bumpy. I haven't changed detergents or anything else. He uses a pacifier when he sleeps and occassionally when we go out. He has also recently began sleeping on his tummy, therefore his face is now on the sheet whereas it never was before. I'm not sure what is causing it. Any advice?

TIA, Adrienne

Sounds like a food allergy to me. Anything new in those stage two foods that he hasn't had before? My ds got a rash like that once from breastfeeding while I was on antibiotics for mastitis. The doctors weren't concerned and it went away as soon as I finished my course of meds.

If you find something new that he's been exposed to (like corn maybe?) cut it out of his diet and see if the rash goes away. If so, avoid that food (or product) for a couple of months and then carefully try it again. If the reaction doesn't go away, then you haven't found the culprit yet.

Good luck!

Thanks Jenny. I forgot to mention in my post that he is teething too. He's got two swollen little bumps on his bottom gums that are just about to poke through. Do you think that might be a contributing factor?

It could be if he's drooling a lot because of it. Lots of drool rubbing around under the pacifier could cause some irritation, I would think.

That's the cure all for babies - teething!! It's all teething!! Fever, rash, grumpiness, you name it! ROFL! With two and three year olds everything is "a phase." Screaming? It's a phase. Not eating? It's a phase. Arguing? It's a phase. Gotta love the easy answers. ;) But seriously, if there's no new foods I think teething could be it.

My oldest got that same thing when he would eat Ranch dressing. It never made him sick, was never itchy, just made his face around his mouth red and blotchy.
It could be a ingredient in the food you gave him.
Did it make him sick? Itch?
I would watch closley what you feed him and try one thing at a time and see which one it is that makes him break out like that.

Thanks. I've recently given him the chicken noodle, chicken vegetable, and turkey vegetable Stage 2 dinners and noticed it. I'll have to figure out if it was one of them.

You might want to check with the ped to see if it is still okay to feed these.
It might just be a reaction on the skin, and not harmful.
My oldest still eats ranch and is fine.

My dd (19ish months) has had orange juice for the last few months, all of a sudden, I gave her little bit in her sippy cup before we went out today, and her face broke out in a rash. I washed it, put lotion on it, and it seemed to go down. I guess it was the oj, but who knows. Gotta hate these "fun" trials!!!
