retirement party for "mom"

I want to plan a retirement party for a friend who was a stay-at-home mom. Kids are grown. Husband recently retired. Her husband and many of her friends have received the encouragement and praise that come from a retirement party that marks the successful conclusion of a chosen career. She has been a "June Cleaver" mom and and "Betty Crocker" wife. Now at 60, she needs a formal statement of starting the next adventure in retirement life. I suspect many in this SAHM topic are young moms with young children. Would appreciate any party ideas or advice on which discussion board might be a good place for this question. I'm aiming for supportive and humorous tone for the party. Thanks.

I want to start off by saying that I think it is a great idea.

I think that is such a great and appreciative idea! If you think about it, she's been in the same "job" for 18+ years. I bet she would really appreciate that you would recognize her and her unconventional achievements. I think as SAHMs we often feel that the things we do and a lot of it that we put a lot of work and thought into go unnoticed.

I don't really know so much about a theme. Possibly have it be formal or semi-formal because it is different than she was probably used to dressing. I know I don't have a lot of reasons to get dressed up so it would probably be nice to have it a little fancy, then it will seem official. And you could also have people write a page or so about how she helped/sacrificed/did something for them and turn it into a book for her to keep. You can go to Kinko's or a similar store and have it bound. Then you could also have a few people read theirs to everyone.

Have fun!
