Ok, I know I've already asked for help in this area, but now I'm REALLY serious about getting ds off the bottle completely. So please share all of your stories about how you did it. I know one lady said she did it cold turkey (was that Olivia?) So what I'm doing is I started to introduce the sippy (yes, I've tried all kinds, he does have a preference) at lunch. That one is the one he's most likely to accept and to maybe even drink the whole thing. Sometimes he doesn't though. And we try one at dinner, too, but he usually only will drink about an ounce. So last night, I threw one bottle away right in front of him and said "no more bottle!" just kind of matter of factly. The only thing is, of course, there are MORE bottles, and I HAVE to give him liquids right now b/c he's a major sufferer of constipation (we've done all the doctor's stuff, visits, advice, etc., he's just a stopped up little kid). So I have to up his fluids as it is. So to stop and just throw out the bottles would be a couple of days of pure hell, right? And he wouldn't be getting much fluid b/c of refusing to drink out of the cup for a few days, right? But the other thing is the longer I don't just DO it, the longer it will be that he'll ride this out as long as he can. Did anyone else have major problems weaning from the bottle? My ds is 13 1/2 months old, and I've been "weaning" for a little over a month now. I know it might take 6 months if I do it the way the "experts" say to...and I don't think I can stand that. I want him on the sippies entirely ASAP, but definitely by the end of the month as we're taking a big driving trip and I don't want to wash nipples anymore! Help if you have some advice, PLEASE!!
Thanks in advance, Debbie

What does your pediatrician say to do since there is a problem with constipation? It's a matter of wills I think. If the child will take a sippy at all then they'll take a sippy all the time. You just have to get rid of the bottles completely and not have the temptation there for YOU not them to use it.
Good luck.

Debbie, Yes it was me that said we did it cold turkey. I believe that with both of my girls we did it right before they turned 1. As with what Amber said, for my second child it was alot easier cause she had always saw her sister with sippy cups. It probably took a couple of days for them to get use to it then they just forgot about them, as long as you do not show them a bottle. It is hard but I would only try it if you are only giving him 2 bottles a day (morning/night), if not I would do what Kate suggests and first dwindle down to 2 bottles a day then do cold turkey. Another story I have to mention, but I never tried it with my dd's is: my mother said that my brother was really hooked on his bottle and when he wanted one he would go to the fridge and get it himself; then one day she decided to put a fake spider on top of the bottle inside the fridge so when he went to go get it he did not want to touch the bottle cause of the spider and never wanted a bottle after that..lol. Isn't that funny, I almost was gonna try that but I was gonna put a bug inside the bottle..lol. Anyway, Good luck with whatever you decide to do and keep us posted.
