sippy cup transition (age 3)

DD (just turned 3) is very stubborn about drinking out of a regular cup. She is hooked on her playtex sippy cup! She can drink out of those small medicine cups but that's about it. She refuses to try anything larger. The preschool she will go to in the fall uses the 5 oz dixie cups. DD will drink out of a cup with a straw, but they will not use straws in preschool. Any creative ideas?

I would just keep trying them with her. She will eventually go from sippy to cup.

I dont have much more of a suggestion then that, sorry.

Just send a change of clothes along to the preschool and don't worry about it. My ds was the same way at that age. He drank water out of 5 oz paper cups at preschool. For a few weeks, he routinely spilled some of his drink at snack time. It really wasn't a problem. They either changed his clothes or took him out on the playground to air dry. Eventually, he got the hang of it.

It's funny, but she may still resist paper cups at home, but might have no problem using them at preschool and do just fine with it. Sometimes all they need is to have something introduced in a different environment. A couple of months after DS started preschool, he asked if we could get a paper cup dispenser for the kitchen.

My thoughts also. I have a 2 1/2 y.o. ds who is stubborn about it too, but he is more likely to use a regular cup at grandma's than at home. I think it's because he knows the sippys are around at home. He's still a little immature for me to push him to use reg. cups all the time (he puts them on their side or might shake them or just does not pay attention to what he is doing.) Eventually, however, I will just have him watch me "throw them away" (of course in a clean bag so I can use them for baby #2 coming in July!) Or I might just not take them on vacation sometime and say "Oops! Left them at home." Good luck and let me know how things go. Ds will start preschool in Jan.

One thing that a friend did was take her son to the store and let him pick out his very own special cup (she made a big deal out of it and her child thought that it was really a big treat.) THEN, when they got home she explained that the sippy cups were only to be used for drinking water - if he wanted juice, milk, Kool-Aid, etc. he had to use the new special cup. At first he refused to use it, but after a few days of drinking nothing but water from the sippy, he got tired of it and moved on to the big cup. Of course, this method will only work if you are firm about it - if you give in and let her drink juice or anything else from the sippy cup, it won't work. Good luck!
