I just want to share with you, details about my morning. I volunteered (I know, that part is NOT unusual) to help out with Katie's class and their Gold Rush. My girls go to a very small school (117 students in total) and it is a charter school. This means that alot of it is funded by grants. They have many more opportunities at this school than many of the schools around us. They have an emphasis on the environment - which only makes sense because of where they are situated. On a creek, with a nature trail behind the school. In the spring, they have an Art Show on the nature trail - they set up huge refrigerator boxes that have been painted black, and then put the kids artwork on them. They distribute them throughout the nature trail and then the parents can tour it. It is awesome. They also have enough hip waders and snowshoes for everyone in the school. The hipwaders came in handy today when the kids were panning for gold. It was truly amazing. I helped set up the food. We had a 4th grade class from a neighboring school come to join us. The kids were paired up and then they got to go see all the "claims" available. After that, they came in to bid (they were given envelopes at the beginning, with "money" in them) on a claim. Once their claims were all taken up, we put them in the waders and took them with their panning devices (which was something they had to make at home) down to the creek. The kids hopped in and started panning! Oh, was it amazing! Then, they had to cash it in so they could buy their lunch! If they were smart, they didn't spend their whole wad on their claim, so they would come out just right. Katie had an absolute blast!! What a fun day, and I can't wait to do it again when Molly is in 4th grade!! Thought I'd share - it was quite the nice morning. Now, I'm home for an hour until the Halloween parade starts at school. The girls are off tomorrow and Friday - statewide teacher's convention.
Thanks for letting me babble on.

Wendy, that sounds so awesome! I love how you describe their school, with an emphasis on the environment. That is just too cool. I wish my kids went to a school like that. I'm so glad you had fun, and they had fun, and that it was such a rewarding experience. I'm sure my boys would have LOVED that!!
Thanks for sharing!
