To Tell or Not to Tell...quitting work

Hi everyone,

I am a first timer on this board and a first time mother-to-be after 4 years of infertility. I would like to get some advice about whether or not I should tell my boss that I am planning on staying at home permanently after my babies are born in October. I am afraid that if I tell her now or this summer(yes, it's a her and I am still not sure if she will understand), I will lose my insurance and not have it when I need it during the labor and delivery. Eventually, I will be put on my husband's insurance (we have separate insurance coverage through our work), but I don't think I can until after the twins are born. My parents think I should tell her and the rest of my co-workers during my maternity leave that I am not coming back...but I am already getting questioned about and don't know what to say.

Any advice, suggestions, opinions would be appreciated! Maybe one of you has gone through this very thing...anyway...Thanks so much!

Kate

I think you should do what you think is best.
Do you think she will end your ins? I don't know if that would be legal.
Just remmeber, its your choice.

They are not supposed to ask.

Just tell her you don't know, but as of now you are planning to return to work. Something could happen to change your mind, and you don't want to be out a job.

I was in the same position with my first born. I was advised

My personal opinion would be to not tell them until you are on your maternity leave. Just tell you boss/co-workers that you are still in the decision process of what your plans are. And you've still got time to fully decide. I can understand why you are worried. I'm sure I would be as well. And I think I would stick with this unless you can 100% guarantee that your DH's insurance will pick up immediately if you should lose your's. Good luck & congrats on the twins!

First off, congratulations!!!!! You must be so excited.

But back to your question, I don't know where you live, but normaly the employer can't ask that question, whether you are returning or not. Where I live, we have 52 weeks of combined mat leave & Parental leave. 1 year. About 3 weeks before my year was up, my employer contacted me to inform me of some things that were going on, to get me up to speed. I said at that time, that I still had 3 weeks to decide if I was returning. I did at that time mention that I was doubtful. (I knew before I got pregnant I wasn't returning)

You shouldn't advise them now that you may / may not return. THEY SHOULDN'T ASK!!!. If they do, just go along with it. You have no reason to commit one way or the other now. Wait until your mat leave is almost done. Chances are before you leave for mat leave, they will bring in someone you have to train to take over your job in your absence. Enjoy your babies, and tell them your decison when you get there and know what you want to do!

Good luck
